11-year-old gives birth to girl in Paraguay

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) An 11-year-old girl who was denied an abortion after being raped gave birth Thursday, the culmination of a case that put a spotlight on child rape in this poor South American nation and drew criticism from human rights groups.
Elizabeth Torales, a lawyer for the girl's mother, told The Associated Press that the minor gave birth to a baby girl via cesarean in a Red Cross hospital in Asuncion, Paraguay's capital. She said reported there were no complications and both the mother and baby were resting.
"The baby doesn't yet have a name," said Torales, who added that her client and the girl's grandmother had requested custody of the infant.
Hospital director Mario Villalba told reporters outside the hospital that the birth took about 35 minutes. She said the girl would remain in the hospital for three or four days, "like any other patient who has had a cesarean." She said the minor was currently accompanied by her grandmother, but declined to give more details.

(51,574 posts)Of course she had a C-section. An tiny 11-year-old's body cannot give birth vaginally; an 11-year-old is not supposed to be giving birth at all. The leadership and judiciary of Paraguay should all be in jail.

ASUNCION, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- An 11- year-old girl gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday in Paraguay's capital of Asuncion, in a case that has sparked outrage from numerous observers, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
The family's lawyer, Elizabeth Torales, told the press at the Reina Sofia hospital that the baby girl had been born via cesarean and that both the mother and the child were well.
The baby will remain in hospital for a few days, and her mother and grandmother have applied for custody.
However, the horrifying details surrounding this young girl's pregnancy are clouding the future.
When the case first broke out earlier this year, it was widely reported that the girl had been raped by her stepfather when she was 10. The man has since been charged and has a court case pending.

The "mother" and child are well? The "mother" IS the child.

It was a situation almost too heart-wrenching to comprehend. In April this year came the news from Paraguay that Mainumby (not her real name) then a 10-year-old girl, had become pregnant after she was repeatedly raped, allegedly by her stepfather. The girl had been taken to hospital several times in a four-month-period before the pregnancy was discovered.
After finding out the horrific news, Mainumbys mother, whose legal complaint against her daughters abuser had fallen on deaf ears, made a request to the authorities to allow her daughter to have an abortion. But the government refused it, and instead moved the girl into a home for young mothers.
The reason? Paraguay, like many other countries in Latin America, has some of the worlds most restrictive abortion laws where terminating a pregnancy is only allowed if the life of the pregnant woman is at risk. Authorities decided this case did not fall under the exception, despite the risk that a pregnancy poses to such a young girls physical and mental health.
Despite a global and national outcry, the authorities never budged and last night the case came to its conclusion, as Mainumby now 11 years old gave birth via caesarean section. Thankfully, both the girl and the newborn appear to be in stable health condition.
