Harkin endorses Clinton for president

Iowa Democratic power broker Tom Harkin and his wife, Ruth, are throwing their weight behind a presidential candidate: Hillary Clinton.

The highly coveted endorsement is a coup for Clinton, but it’s unlikely to snuff out the Bernie Sanders wildfire here.

Harkin, a retired 30-year U.S. senator who is arguably the most successful Democrat in Iowa’s history, said in an opinion piece published by The Des Moines Register on Thursday night that he and his wife believe Clinton will be the best fighter for social and economic justice.

“As Democrats, we’re fortunate to have a slate of candidates that are all fine individuals,” Harkin wrote, “but we need a fighter who has a record of getting things done and the vision for the future that will build on the progress we’ve made.”

Harkin, 75, still has big clout in Iowa Democratic circles and his endorsement will likely send a powerful signal to undecided voters —........

Harkin: Clinton shares my values on social and economic justice

We all know Iowans have a sincere responsibility in nominating our next president. This year, that responsibility is as important as it’s ever been.

As Iowans and as a nation we fought back from a terrible recession, but we are making progress. Now it’s time for a president who can create a stronger future. As Democrats, we’re fortunate to have a slate of candidates that are all fine individuals, but we need a fighter who has a record of getting things done and the vision for the future that will build on the progress we’ve made. For my wife, Ruth and I, that candidate is Hillary Clinton.

I have had the privilege of knowing Hillary Clinton for a long time. She and I share many of the same deeply-held beliefs. We believe everyone should be able to find well-paying jobs, that every child should receive the best education possible, that the elderly should be able to retire with dignity and security, and that everyone should have access to quality and affordable healthcare. From ensuring universal access to pre-kindergarten to building a clean-energy economy, a common thread runs through all of these plans — the idea of expanding opportunity.

As a kid, I never could have imagined all the opportunities I would have in my life. I grew up in the small town of Cumming, Iowa, the son of an immigrant mother and a coal-mining father with a sixth-grade education. When my family fell on hard times, my father was hired by the Works Progress Administration. That job gave him dignity and hope. During my 40 years serving Iowa in Congress, I kept my father’s WPA card hanging on the wall in my office to remind me where I came from and who I was fighting for.

I don't hear any screeds.

I have always liked Harkin. My daughter used to go to his steak fry every year when she lived in Iowa.

Thank you, Senator Harkin. You always did have your priorities straight.

who can offer those things are Hillary and O'Malley. O'Malley's wrong for VP geographically, so I do hope there's a Cabinet post in his future.
