David Oyelowo Next To play James Bond
Source: Yahoo! Movies
David Oyelowo is next up to play James Bond
after snaring the role in a forthcoming audiobook.
The star of Selma, in which he played Martin Luther King Jr, was personally invited to take on the part by the estate of Ian Fleming, the creator of 007.
Though its a rumour that has oft baffled its subject, it appears hes now beaten Idris Elba to the accolade.
Elba had long been rumoured as a possible replacement once Daniel Craig relinquishes the role of Bond, but had frequently denied any supposed meetings with Bond studio Eon.

Just to clear up the clickbait: Oyelowo will be portraying Bond in an audiobook, but not (yet) on-screen.
I still am Team Idris for that honor.
Able Sirdi was I ere I saw Idris Elba....

(56,582 posts)Elba or Oyelowo would either of them expand greatly the breadth Craig has brought to the character.

(114,904 posts)I love David, but Idris is just exactly everything James Bond is supposed to be.
And they need to cast Mos Def as Q.

(56,582 posts)Craig -- all props to him, seriously -- has really changed this role. It's no longer just a handsome dude in a tux, but it's an actor you expect things from. Oyelowo is that, don't get me wrong. But Elba is literally everything a Bond should be: handsome, debonair, slightly aloof, powerfully vulnerable in a hidden way like the dude on the cover of the romance novel: this is Idris's wheelhouse.

(56,582 posts)On "The Wire", honestly, I think they edited him badly. But how you treat a villain that's more charismatic than your protagonist is always a difficult question (see Milton, John).
But, yeah, Luther really was what let him explore his range as an actor, and it was ****ing amazing.

(63,216 posts)Or something. Can't wait to see the Conservative talkers have their spasms about this.

(3,212 posts)That role should go to Idris Elba if we are going to go with a black guy.
Hunky. Sexy. Tall. An air of mystery.
Terrific actor.
He has it all.
I highly recommend Luther to anyone who hasn't seen it. I think it's still on Netflix.
Definitely "Team Elba" here!

(348 posts)But it would seem really odd having Bond be black after all these years. What next Martin Luther played by an Asian. Mohammed played by a blonde Swede. Reminds me of the old westerns with white guys playing Indians.

(114,904 posts)I suppose you have a problem with a black actress playing Juliet.
JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,350 posts)MLK was one real person, Martin Luther was another. Certainly, an Asian could play MLK and another Asian could play Martin Luther. Asia's a big place with many different people, and then there's makeup.
Yes, a black actress could play Juliet. And an Hispanic actress could play Romeo. It would still be a compelling story.

(348 posts)30 movies and read several books where she was a different race, yes it would seem odd. Not a 'problem', just odd. Like Johnny Depp playing Tonto.

Or Othello played by a Caucasian-- a stage standard until rather recently.
Yet I can certainly understand that many people invest much more into appearance than actual performance.

(101,321 posts)I looked up what Hugh Quarshie, the black actor mention in the OP article as doing a Bond audiobook last year (too old to play Bond on screen now - he's 60) is doing, and he's playing Othello, with Lucian Msamati playing Iago: http://www.theguardian.com/stage/2015/jun/12/othello-rsc-stratford-hugh-quarshie-lucian-msamati-joanna-vanderham
