11-year-old Paraguay rape victim has baby, stokes abortion debate

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by azurnoir (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: smh.com.au

Asuncion: An 11-year-old rape victim gave birth in Paraguay on Thursday after being denied termination of her pregnancy by doctors and judicial officials, stoking the debate over abortion in the overwhelmingly Catholic country. The former partner of the girl's mother is accused of the rape.

In Paraguay, two girls aged 10 to 14 give birth every day. The cases are often linked to sexual violence. Thursday's birth came by way of a programmed cesarean section, Dr. Mario Villalba, director of the Red Cross hospital where the operation took place, told local radio

"A baby girl, weighing 3.5 kilos, was born without any complications or anomalies," Dr Villalba said. "The post-operative recovery is going very well."

Paraguayan law permits abortion if a mother's life is endangered. In this instance, a panel including medical doctors, psychologists and judicial officials determined that the life of the girl was not at risk.

Words escape me to fully express the anger and disgust I am feeling. Bet your ass if this was the daughter or granddaughter of one of these assholes who denied the termination of this rape pregnancy, there would not have been any problem with getting an abortion.

Fuck them all...may they rot in hell for the torture they inflicted on this child.

This is what Republicans have in store for us if they take the WH and hold both houses of congress and the SCOTUS. Be very afraid.

IMO, forcing a rape victim of ANY AGE to bear the child of the rapist is sadistic. It is simply allowing the rape to continue.

Anyway, lack of compassion drives me nuts and forcing this young kid to go through the pregnancy is beyond the pale.

what kind of lowlife piece of shit rapes a 10 year old? And apparently, it's the thing to do in Paraguay in that "two girls aged 10 to 14 give birth every day." What. The. Fuck.

Don't even get me started on the RCC.

I'm a bit disturbed that there isn't the requisite "So-and-so is currently being held in jail awaiting trial for the rape of a minor" -line

So they continue the violence by cutting her the fuck open? After all she has had to endure, they cut her open and this fucking doctor says the child was "born without any complications or anomalies?" Getting raped and forced into a pregnancy and c-section sounds like complication and anomaly to me. What a tone deaf asshole.

I hope that she recovers with minimum harm. That's the most we can hope for. Plus, that the worthless moron who raped her is prosecuted.

At least (very, very small comfort), she received medical care. Had they tried to make her deliver vaginally, probably both she and the baby would have had an agonizing death.

We're researching places to move outside the US if a Repug becomes president. Paraguay will not be added to the list.
