IS Affiliate Takes Control Of New Area In Libya's Sirte

Source: Associated Press

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) -- Witnesses and officials say Libya's Islamic State affiliate has seized control of a neighborhood in the central city of Sirte, going door to door searching for members of a rival group it has been battling for days.

Mohammed Hadia, a government committee member, said IS fighters are looking for members of the Frejani tribe to kill or detain. The tribe fought alongside an Islamist group that refused to pledge allegiance to the IS affiliate, which then laid a siege on the neighborhood for days.

Alaa Frejani said his family in Sirte saw IS militants using loudspeakers to warn residents of neighboring areas they would face a similar fate if they cross them.

The IS affiliate spread in Sirte in March, taking advantage of the chaos plaguing Libya since 2011.

Very few here listened. Too many on DU were cheering, "Yay, Gaddafi's overthrown! Yay, Libyan freedom!"

I think I even laid out what the future would hold after Gaddafi was gone. No one listened.

travesty with Syria.

Either incredibly stupid people or incredibly evil people cooking up these schemes. Perhaps a good measure of both...

Really? It's pretty much pulled.

Then there's the obvious confusion on the part of the OP. I do believe that while HRC was secretary of state, calling her Madame President would have been an error.

And not by Madame President Clinton, either. The "they" doing the "pulling" included such wonderful folk as Mr. President Obama and monsieur le president Hollande, not just Frau Merkel. Forget the name of the guy in Italy.

I guess we do have a fallback position: Obama was such a naif, so stupid and incompetently out of touch, that his secretary of state was running things in his name. In which case I guess HRC already has presidential/executive experience.

It's a sucky choice. Either Obama helped to screw up Libya and Syria and has to man up or we have to say he was stupid and powerless to stop a strong woman.
