Allegheny Technologies to lock out more than 2,000 USW union members

Source: Post-Gazette

By Len Boselovic

The United Steelworkers union today denounced Allegheny Technologies Inc. for bargaining in bad faith after the Pittsburgh specialty metals producer said it will lock out more than 2,000 union workers Saturday and operate its plants with salaried and non-union employees as well as outside contractors.

The workers are employed at 12 plants in six states, including the company’s operations in the Alle-Kiski Valley. They have been working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30.

“It’s outrageous that the company has chosen this destructive path, but it is clear that ATI intended to lock these workers out since day one,” USW president Leo Gerard said in a statement released by the union this afternoon. “From the beginning, the company has bargained in bad faith to dictate terms of an agreement.”

The USW statement accused the company of asking workers “to accept draconian and unnecessary concessions.” It said that although Allegheny Technologies insists it is focused on cutting costs, the company is wasting millions to hire replacement workers and security personnel while creating ill will among its work force and the communities where it operates.

Until we realize that - and are willing to defy Taft-Hartley - we will continue to lose.

and is a major supplier to all major Jet Engine companies, as well as the aviation industry for forgings and various metal products.

Without the skilled labor, the parts and forgings produced while the critical employees are locked out create an aeronautical safety hazard.

Somebody needs to notify the FAA pronto.
