Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson on Friday canceled the states contracts with Planned Parenthood, making his the third Southern state to do so since anti-abortion activists released a series of videos that they say suggests the organization sells fetal tissue.
It is apparent that after the recent revelations on the actions of Planned Parenthood, that this organization does not represent the values of the people of our state and Arkansas is better served by terminating any and all existing contracts with them, Hutchinson, a Republican, said in a statement.
The move comes after the U.S. government has warned states moving to defund womens health group Planned Parenthood that they may be in conflict with federal law. Planned Parenthood has come under massive criticism from Republicans and been investigated by several Republican-controlled states after the release of the videos by an anti-abortion activist group called the Center for Medical Progress.
The Arkansas contracts involved services including nurse practitioners, pharmacy and family planning and were delivered through the Arkansas Medicaid program. No state funds were used for abortions, except in the case of incest, rape or when the life of the mother was at stake.

(735 posts)And this pisses me off beyond all measure!! When I was a single mom I would not have had access to any birth control or testing without PP. Asa Hutchinson says that he is doing it because it's what the people of Arkansas want!

from Nicholas Kristoffs article in NYT "
This in a country where half of all pregnancies are unintended, where 30 percent of American teenage girls become pregnant by age 19.
The Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health, calculates that Title X family planning centers prevent about one million unintended pregnancies a year, of which 345,000 would have ended in abortion. It says that every year Title X clinics avert some 53,000 cases of chlamydia and 8,800 cases of gonorrhea, and save the lives of 1,100 women who would otherwise die of cervical cancer.
In other words, Title X prevents an abortion about once every 90 seconds...."
This should be shoved in the faces of all those ignorant or misinformed senators who voted to defund Planned Parenthood as they have no idea how much good this organization does.

(21,871 posts)In 2008 (the most recent year for which data are available), the public cost of teen childbearing in Arkansas was $143 million.
The one-page briefs linked below explore teen pregnancy in Arkansas, its impact on education and the economy, and connection to child welfare and juvenile justice. The final brief provides policy options for state legislators to consider to prevent teen pregnancy.

(1,254 posts)another pro-life group, Life Dynamic, pulled similar stunts with junk videos and making the same claims. That is, PP clinics performing late-term abortions, murdering live fetuses to harvest and sell parts. They went after two bio-tech labs and a PP clinic in Kansas. With LD's help, it prompted 20/20 to do a segment on one of their shows. And within a few days, it prompted a congressional hearing, calling one of the witnesses in the Life Dynamic junk video. It was revealed that the witness who worked for and was testifying against one of the bio-tech labs was being paid by Life Dynamic to spy on the lab and PP. Well on the urging of congress, the FBI did an investigation into Life Dynamics allegations and no evidence of any crimes. The two bio-labs and PP were exonerated. But not before they were publicly humiliated and congress GOP got to use Life Dynamics videos for political advantage. Sixteen years later, DEJA VU, we see the same campaign of Life Dynamic continuing with Center for Medical Progress. Undercover videos produced by deceitful people. And in their last video, we see Ms. Holly O'Donnell speaking out against her ex-employer, Stem Express, claiming they routinely broke consent laws. Stem Express is denying this and claims they adhere to all laws and that Ms O'Donnell violated confidentiality pledge and stole Stem Express documents. Now here is where the veracity of Ms. O'Donnells claims falls apart. She shows a fedex shipping log where the specimens collected that day were going. The med labs, universities, etc. BY LAW, can't receive any specimens without copies of the consent forms that Ms. O'Donnell claims her co-workers are deliberately skipping at times. If they accepted any tissue shipments without the proper documents, they would be breaking the law and risk losing federal funding for their projects as well. Ms. O'Donnell doesn't know it yet, but she screwed herself big time. Better lawyer up. Bet she got paid by CMP to do that video. Watch her get sued.
