2 DEAD, 5 HOSPITALIZED IN HAZMAT SITUATION NEAR DES PLAINES

UNINCORPORATED DES PLAINES, Ill. (WLS) -- Two men are dead in connection with a hazardous materials situation that unfolded Thursday afternoon at a townhouse in unincorporated Des Plaines, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office has confirmed.
A third person from the home is in critical condition at a local hospital. Four Cook County Sheriff's officers were hospitalized after they entered the home and had trouble breathing. The officers were treated and released shortly before 7 p.m., said Sophia Ansari, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

They've been calling this a "mysterious incident" all night, saying they hadn't identified any substances or noticed any fumes. Only now are they mentioning a crockpot.

John Tae Kim, 83, and Hong Kyqkim, 53, were found dead inside a home on the 9400 block of West Harrison Street in Maine Township, police say.
A woman was also found unresponsive in the house. She was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

(175,742 posts)He's standing to the left of the fire truck in the last photo, wearing his regular working clothes and not a hazmat suit. Usually, he's assigned to the ambulance. I had wondered if he was on that call yesterday. How weird to see him.

(36,281 posts)I'll bet that car is out of gas and that it sat long enough for the battery to discharge through the ignition after running out of fuel. The crock pot likely boiled dry when the home occupants fell unconscious.

(36,281 posts)The two men were identified as Hong Kyq Kim, 53, and John Tae Kim, 83, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The men died of carbon monoxide poisoning, a Cook County Sheriff's Office official said late Friday.
