Four held over Austria truck tragedy as migrant deaths mount
Source: Yahoo7! News / AFP
Hungary said Friday it had arrested four people over the discovery of the decomposing bodies of 71 migrants, believed to be Syrian, in an abandoned truck in Austria.
Hungarian police said three of the suspects held over the latest grim tragedy involving migrants seeking refuge in Europe were Bulgarians and one was Afghan.
Thursday's grisly discovery of the truck on a motorway near the Slovakia and Hungary borders -- a rare occurrence on land, with most migrant deaths taking place at sea -- sent shockwaves through Europe.
The news of the arrests came as Libyan rescue workers recovered 76 bodies from yet another capsized boat in the Mediterranean crammed with people fleeing conflict and hardship in the Middle East and Africa.

(62,325 posts)'turn the Middle East into a Glass Parking lot'. These neocons have so far managed to escape justice for the horrors they have brought down on millions of innocent people. Libya and Syria were on their list of countries to destroy.
So while Obama, actually it was France, who now refuses to take in refugees from the country they persuaded NATO, not that NATO ever needs much persuading, that pushed to invade Libya, did unfortunately go along. The day Congress gave Bush/Cheney the power to begin this horror was the day the fate of the seven countries on their list were sealed.
Someone someday will have to pay for the human tragedies, the war crimes, the torture that was unleashed on that part of the world.
Everyone who did not try to stop it in the beginning, bears responsibility for these continuing horrors.
I don't see many of the old Libya invasion cheerleaders around these days.
The racism involved in our FP is so blatant I wonder why all those who claim to be so concerned about this issue, never seem to notice what we are doing to African nations, and ME nations.
This is so incredibly sad and horrible. We created such horrific nightmares in their countries they were willing to risk anything to escape them.
Until some of them, Blair too and Sarkozy and all of our 'allies' who set this in motion, are brought to justice, we can never claim the moral authority we still try to claim again.

Mr Ban (UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon) said he was "horrified and heartbroken" at the latest loss of life. "A large majority of people undertaking these arduous and dangerous journeys are refugees fleeing from places such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan," he said.
Just like in Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge, when powerful nations destroy weaker nations this is often the result. (Nixon bombed the shit out of Cambodia.)

(101,321 posts)The deaths people are fleeing is causing overwhelmingly by those groups, not outside nations. The fighting started when some Syrians rebelled against Assad as part of the 'Arab Spring'.
