Clinton: 'Global effort' needed to help refugees in Europe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is calling for a "concerted global effort" to assist the hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia seeking refuge in Europe.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination said Monday that "everyone should be asked to do more" to help the migrants, many of whom are fleeing the civil war in Syria and from areas in that country and in Iraq under the control of Islamic State militants.

"I think we need to have a broad-based global response," Clinton said before spending Labor Day campaigning in eastern Iowa and parts of Illinois. "The United States certainly should be at the table, but so should everybody else."

"And if countries are not able to do more physically in taking in these refugees, they should do more financially," she said.

Clinton, the former secretary of state, said she was speaking most particularly about the oil-rich states of the Persian Gulf.

"They should be funding a lot of the resettlement work and supporting those countries that are bearing the burden of the refugees," Clinton said............

She is right. And glad to see she is talking to the oil-rich states. On the other hand--the "West" is attracting them now.

because she has been a supporter of every US military action in the Middle East and Africa, all of which have helped create the conditions in which thousands feel their homes are bad enough to abandon.

Stupid Republicans are still trying to get her for the tragedy in Benghazi, when the real tragedy lies in the fact that Hillary was one of the main people (as part of Obama's neo-con State Dept) advocating the removal (i.e., murder) of Muammar Gaddafi and the destruction of what was once one of the African continent's most stable and prosperous countries.

Hillary, why don't you advocate the cessation of all overt and covert military support for Islamic extremists in Africa and the Middle East (you know, like the ones who turned on your State Dept. folks in Benghazi)? That would help a lot more than you pretending as if you give a sh-t about the people who's lives you destroyed.

More weasel words in my opinion.

Sorry, the only way to stop refugees crises from developing is to stop destroying countries for no good reason.

Half a million refugees gather in Libya to attempt perilous crossing to Europe | World news | The Guardian

Up to half a million refugees are gathering in Libya to attempt the crossing to Europe on the deadly boats that have killed thousands already.

The toll of misery was revealed by senior Royal Navy officers leading Britain’s Mediterranean rescue mission off the Libyan coast. Britain’s amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark has helped save around 4,000 refugees before they drowned having set sail in unseaworthy boats.

The ship’s 350-strong company of sailors and Royal Marines is bracing itself to rescue a further 3,000. Captain Nick Cooke-Priest said: “Indications are that there are 450,000 to 500,000 migrants in Libya who are waiting at the border.”

As he spoke, intelligence reports were warning Bulwark’s crew, which is among about 11 rescue vessels in the central Mediterranean, of thousands more migrants in the water. Britain is working with the Italian navy on Operation Weald to rescue migrants who have fallen prey to people smuggling gangs in Libya.

It still is a very course, not diplomatic comment. Our top diplomat should have been better than that.

Hillary has been a huge proponent of war and what is more destabilizing than war? The most important thing the US can do to help the situation is stop bombing Syria and the region! For some strange reason, Hillary does not seem to understand the link between her warmongering and supporting the "endless war" doctrine and the humanitarian crises and instability her policies cause throughout the world. Look past the veneer of Hillary because there is usually a massive disconnect between what she says and what she does.
