David Cameron says that he would use nuclear weapons

Source: Independent

David Cameron has said there are circumstances in which he would launch a nuclear attack on another country.

The PM described nuclear bombs as “the ultimate insurance policy” and said the attack could be “justified”.

Mr Cameron’s statement comes after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would not use nuclear bombs on another country’s population.

“If you ... believe like me that Britain should keep the ultimate insurance policy of an independent nuclear deterrent, you have to accept there are circumstances in which its use would be justified,” Mr Cameron told BBC One’s Andrew Marr show on 4 October.

PM: I Am Prepared To Press Red Button

Sky NewsSky News – 9 hours ago

The Prime Minister has said he is prepared to press the red button if he has to, as he looked to exploit Labour's division on the nation's security.

On the first day of the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, David Cameron said he believed the country should retain the Trident nuclear deterrent.

And he said that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's recent comment that he would not authorise the use of nuclear weapons even if Britain was under nuclear attack "undermined national security".

Mr Cameron said: "The problem with his answer is, if you ... believe like me that Britain should keep the ultimate insurance policy of an independent nuclear deterrent, you have to accept there are circumstances in which its use would be justified.

"If you give any other answer then you are, frankly, undermining our national security, undermining our deterrent, " he told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show.

Prompted by Jeremy Corbyn saying that he wouldn't use nukes.

But then again nobody has used nuclear bombs since 1945 anyway. That's quite impressive in itself.

9. It would scarcely be a creditable deterrent if he were not.

Whether or not MAD is a credible deterrent is a bit more of a tricky question, but if all the people with their fingers on the buttons agree that it is, then it provides its own credibility.

11. What would be the point of spending billions on nukes if he was never prepared to use them?

Of course there are circumstances when he would use nukes, and even if there were not, he would not admit to it, in order to preserve their deterrent value.

And anyone who wants to slam him on this should bear in mind that Barack Obama is undoubtedly on the same page as Cameron in this regard.
