Benghazi committee Democrats say they'll release witness transcripts
Source: Reuters
The Democratic minority on a U.S. congressional committee investigating the attack in Benghazi, Libya, intend to defy the committee's Republican leaders by releasing the transcript of a closed-door interview with a former senior aide to Hillary Clinton, they said on Monday.
The announcement came six days after Kevin McCarthy, the leader of U.S. House Republicans, went on television to boast that the federally funded investigation had successfully dented Clinton's poll numbers as she runs for the Democratic presidential nomination.
McCarthy, who is seeking to become the next House speaker, later clarified that he had not meant to suggest that harming the Democratic front-runner's chances at winning the November 2016 election was the committee's purpose.
This has not stopped Democrats, including Clinton herself, from seizing on his comments as confirmation of what they have believed all along.

(776 posts)Republicans had told the press that they were treating the [Cheryl Mills] interview "as if it were classified." That's despite the fact that, as the Democrats detail, staff without security clearance had been allowed to attend, the interview began with a statement that it wasn't classified, and afterward, Republicans emailed the interview transcript on an unclassified email system. And that's not considering the series of leakssome of them, naturally, inaccuratethat came from Republicans after they announced that they'd be treating the interview as classified.

(91 posts)Democrats might stand up for themselves if the Republicans keep acting like complete jerks. Maybe.

(23,158 posts)and you are exactly correct, except there is no "if". Repugs will always act like jerks because that's what they are.

(368 posts)I'll believe it when I see it. The Dems lack the courage to stand up for themselves. They should have boycotted the committee moons ago, but were afraid for some reason.

(57,936 posts)ambassadors met there instead of in Tripoli, Libya.
But the way the Republicans have wasted the nation's time on the Benghazi assassination incident is just insulting to all Americans.
We pay these guys a livable wage, and they waste their time, our time, the nation's time, the State Department's time.
And just for political points.
It tells us once again just how hateful and useless they are.
A bunch of incompetents. There is so much that Congress could do to make our country a better place to live, and we don't need a Congress that is mired in the mud of getcha politics.

D) He traveled to Benghazi with a very light security team
E) The terrorists made a well planned attack on the exact day Ambassador Stevens was visiting
F) There is a secret CIA command post near the consulate
G) I have still not seen a reason that Stevens was in Benghazi. Can any DUers help me out with this?
H) What the hell does Hillary Clinton's E-Mail server have to do with any of this? Do they really think there is a "smoking gun" e-mail that will reveal malfeasance or malignancy in this tragedy?
I wonder if any of this will come out in the Gowdy-Issa hearings.

(57,936 posts)I read in what I think was a Dayton newspaper around the time of the 2012 election that a guard at the compound who if I remember correctly was not an American reported that Stephens came to him and asked him about the security measures at the compound before the attack.
The e-mail "scandal" is ridiculous since prior secretaries of state had used personal e-mails. But it was a foolish thing to do. I would not have used my home computer on an insecure network to do work I did not want a hacker to see.
But then, there is no such thin as security on the internet unless you use encryption. Uncle Sam is probably reading all our correspondence or at least recording its existence as we speak.

A new petition calling for an investigation into the House Republican Benghazi Select Committee has put Republicans back on their heels as the American people are demanding answers.
The actions of Leader McCarthy should disgust every decent American. This is not a gaffe, it is a gross assault on the most basic structure and purpose of government. It has to stop. No citizen Republican or Democrat, or Independent wants a government official to use his or her constitutionally granted power (and taxpayer dollars) to attack political opponents.
