Polish festival 'Unsound' forced to move events after accusations of satanism

Polish electronic-leaning festival 'Unsound', which gets underway today (October 11) and continues until next weekend, has been forced to reorganize a concert by Current 93 after accusations of satanism were made against founder David Tibet.
The act were due to play St Catherine's Church in Krakow on October 16, but the set has been relocated, as have three other previously unannounced shows that were due to take place at the venue.

The festival have released an in-depth statement through their website, explaining what has gone on, and talking about their decision to change venues away from the church:
"With great shock, it has come to our attention that accusations have been posted on a Polish Internet website that our festival as preposterous as it is to even repeat allegedly promotes and propagates Satanism. These accusations, initially made in a letter to St Catherine's Church, are completely unfounded, unreasonable, and slanderous. They undermine the good name of the festival, which since 2003 has been an enthusiastic participant in Krakow's cultural life, and we reject the accusation unequivocally."

(2,208 posts)From an interview where he discusses his bands latest album:
"When people ask me about the second coming, some people think that Im being ironic or that Im metaphorically interested in Christ or that I have a weird occult slant on it. My belief is pretty orthodox. People ask do you believe in a literal second coming of Christ?, and I do. I see the skies opening and Christ returning on a white horse, and that is how I see it, so I expect that is how it will happen. The skies will open and we will suddenly think that it wasnt fiction in the bible, as this is reality. At the same time, of course Im aware that people, many Christians, use metaphors, but I can only speak about what I feel and the black ships coming into the sky is therefore a metaphor and a reality."

I can see how the extremely conservative Polish catholic clergy would so totally over-react to David's personal beliefs, lyrics and probably, in my opinion, even just his band's appearance. The catholic church in Poland is very very locked in the past.

(14,779 posts)The term "Curia" means the Vatican in Rome wanted this cancelled. The Polish Church appears to have been willing to leave the concert take place at St Catherine. This sounds like internal church politics, but who and why is just not stated.

(25,586 posts)A wacky apocalyptic Christian, but a Christian nonetheless. His earlier catalog has some anti-Christian themes and a lot of occult content in the form of Thelema and an obsession with Crowley, but that's been replaced by other themes over the decades.
Weird to see Tibet's name in the news -- I've been a fan of his for thirty years.
