Apple Faces $862M In Damages After Patent Lawsuit Loss To University Of Wisconsin
Source: techcrunch
Apple is no stranger to patent lawsuits, but a more recent suit filed by the University of Wisconsin-Madisons licensing branch may prove a costly loss for the iPhone maker.
A United States jury found that Apples A7, A8, and A8X chips, which are present in the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and the new iPhone 6S (plus some models of the iPad), contain technology covered by a 1998 patent filed by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (aka WARF).
The presiding judge, U.S. District Judge William Conley, said that Apple could owe up to $862 million in damages.
Reuters reports that the case was split into three sections (liability, damages, and willful infringement), with the latter being determined at a later date and potentially upping the cost of the loss for Apple.

because he informed my wife via e-mail that Scott Walker is now justified in cutting the UW another $862 million.

(4,450 posts)my father-in-law will be one of the four. The really strange thing is the guy is, by all outward appearances, a kind and pleasant man. I guess this is what a steady diet of Fox News and Charlie Sykes does to you over time.

(369 posts)The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation also own the patents on Warferin, the anti coagulant, and many other bio tech products. They fund the university so much, that for years, U WI's football team was the laughing stock of the Big Ten because did not need a football program. When Donna Shalala became president of the university, she insisted that they fund a good football program. She hired Alvarez as head coach, and the rest is history.
BTW, I am an alum, class of 68.

Apple will appeal and they will get pennies on the dollar, if they are lucky.
This particular patent is so generic that it could apply to almost every chip made by every company for the last two decades. They are only going after Apple, because they think they only have a chance to see some pocket change from them.
