Definitely, this is not your father's Wisconsin.

(23,156 posts)when divorce was looming in my future, I decided I'd move from Kansas. Start a new life in a new place. Wisconsin, most likely Milwaukee, was what I looked at. I am, somewhat sadly, now glad I didn't decide to move there.

(23,156 posts)asshole, incompetent, completely selfish Republicans running things for a fairly long time, so Wisconsin may have some catching up to do.
I wound up in Santa Fe, NM. It's reasonably okay. Our governor is Susana Martinez, known disparagingly as La Tejana, as she came here from Texas. In the past she's been touted as a possible Republican v-p candidate, as she is a Hispanic female, so something of a wet dream for Republicans -- or anyone else that matter -- who never looks past labels or rhetoric to see what a politician is really like.
I love the climate and the amazing clear skies here. The level of corruption in state and local government is astonishing. I've never seen anything like it. Our current Secretary of State, Dianna Duran (Republican, rare at this level and the first one in this position in 80 years, has been charged with "fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, campaign law violations, tampering with public records, conspiracy, and violating the Governmental Conduct Act." Oh, and identity theft, as she listed someone as her campaign treasurer who has said he never acted in that capacity, and she apparently signed his name to some checks. It's hard to say at this point if she'll resign or attempt to stick it out through impeachment proceedings.
Several years ago the Santa Fe County Sheriff had to resign because he was caught selling sheriff department equipment on ebay. I think he served jail time.

(23,156 posts)In this case, the previous Dem was for reasons I no longer recall, considered Not A Good Choice. I wish I could remember more details, and the Google hasn't been helpful here.
New Mexico is for the most part a VERY Democratic state. Our current Republican governor is a bit of an anomaly. She won her first term in 2010 because the previous governor, Bill Richardson, had become extremely unpopular for various reasons. The Democrat running that year, Diane Dinesh, was poisoned by her connection to Richardson, as she'd been his lieutenant governor. So she lost big time. In 2014 the Democrats were in total disarray. I think there were five Dems in the primary, and the man who won, Gary King, was incompetent, pure and simple.
For a state that is largely Democratic, the party is amazingly disorganized.

(5,751 posts)Hopefully if we could flush out all the republicans it wouldn't take so long. But that will take some time too. On second thought, yeah, we're pretty well screwed.

(12,296 posts)... and the GOPers have absolutely no recourse to anything that Administration wants to do, because of the shit the GOP themselves put in place?
They're so damned shortsighted.
