Boehner: God told him Paul Ryan should run for House speaker

Source: AP

WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker John Boehner says he used "Catholic guilt" to persuade Paul Ryan to run for speaker.

On CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday Boehner said he invoked God to persuade his fellow Catholic from refusing to run for speaker to agreeing to do so.

Boehner says he told Ryan: "'This isn't about what you want to do. It's about what God wants you to do. And God has told me, he wants you to" run for speaker.

Ryan did — and won. The Wisconsin congressman has insisted that he will not give up time with his family or stop sleeping in his office in Washington. Boehner, meanwhile, stepped down, inspired by spending time with Pope Francis last month.

Maybe if he stopped spending all of his time telling politicians who should run, telling TV evangelists how natural disasters are caused by homosexuality, etc., he would have a minute or two to actually DO something about starving children, disease, war, famine, drought - ya know, pretty much everything that's fuckin' up the planet and mankind.

I guess God figures that a whiny little asshole like Paul Ryan being Speaker is far more important than anything else.

Which doesn't say much for God.

hard-core Catholic apologists, who will defend the existence of their "god" and the actions of their pope and his followers, no matter how crazy or bigoted, against all comers. You'd think that this kind of lunacy would be hard to find on a progressive web site, but it ain't.

I know that calling you a bigot will cause you to call for a vote which will probably go against me (because on DU, saying something bigoted is OK, saying "that is a bigoted statement is not), so I won't (but that is the only reason I'm not).

feel free to point it out.

But of course, I forget, it's typical of such folk to respond to awkward and uncomfortable truths by flinging charges of "bigotry", whether or not they have gumption to just say it, or whether they have to do it sideways to try to avoid a hide.

I, on the other hand, have no problem called the pope a bigot for his adamant opposition to same-sex marriage, gay adoption rights, and equal treatment for LGBT persons in general. And I've never had to worry about getting a hide from real progressives for saying so straight out.

To make all sorts of bigoted -- and that is the correct word -- remarks about religion in general and Christianity in particular. The Pope disagrees with me on the nature of marriage: The Pope must be a bigot. People who believe in God are mentally deranged. "Religion ruins everything."

Skepticscott does it all the time, and no one calls him on it. In his last post, he calls Catholics bigoted and crazy.

doesn't work, you resort to blatant distortions of other people's positions.

The Pope disagrees with me on the nature of marriage: The Pope must be a bigot.

Nice try at soft-pedaling blatant bigotry, and not even close to my position. The pope actively advocates that an entire segment of the population be deprived of their full rights as human beings, simply because of who they are, and regardless of whether they're even Catholic. That's as bigoted as bigotry gets, dude..and sorry, but pointing that out is anything but, no matter how much it upsets you.

And if you have some evidence that there are NO Catholics who are bigoted or crazy, dish it out. But we won't hold our breath.

.... knowing that little Eddie Munster is a completely self-absorbed shit, Boehner used the "God Card" to talk Lyin' Ryan into taking the job he was on-the-fence about.

We may end up thanking Boehner for this, ultimately, if it turns out to be both a spotlight on & a dead end to Ryan's political career.
