Larry Lessig Ending Democratic Presidential Bid

Source: Bloomberg

“No doubt a better candidate could have gone further, though I doubt anyone could have worked harder, but regardless I must today end my campaign for the Democratic nomination and turn to the question of how best to continue to press for this reform now,” Larry Lessig says in video posted on YouTube.

Kidding. I know how it is spelled. So, who is Larry Lessing? Someone who knows should let us know here so we don't all have to look it up.

186 people filed their Form 2s with the FEC as presidential candidates for the Democratic party.

Webb and now Lessig have dropped out.

no, I just meant, Lessig's entire campaign was based on electoral finance reform. I.e. citizens United. How anyone didn't know that, quite frankly, confuses the hell out of me, or, it's just not that important to you?

However, the bar (1%) to get into the debates was too low under either standard.

It should be 1% ABOVE the margin-of-error.

Getting 1% when the margin-of-error is 4% isn't impressive.

Some of the commentary on this thread is just ironic as hell. We're here on an internet forum, where we share links to all kinds of content, and Lessig has been so instrumental in establishing our right to share that information. I see not only ignorance of that little bit of history, but pride in that ignorance.

Pride in ignorance in favor of a set political position ... where have I seen that kinda of attitude before?

Democrats used to respect scholars, and used to want to hear what they had to say. I think something has changed, because it is pretty clear that is no longer the case.

For those who aren't familiar with Lawrence Lessig and his work (including his association with Barack Obama), give his Wikipedia page a quick read.

Lawrence Lessig

I continue to wonder if there is room for informed dissent in the Democratic Party these days.

There is obviously a large element in the Democratic Party, at DNC, and at DU that do not support informed dissent or one could even argue informed support.

Lessig may not have been a good political candidate but is the real thing regards to intellect and policy in support of democracy and social justice.

and then resign.

No one is going to take you seriously--a major political party isn't going to help you run, help you win, help you assemble a cabinet, and then let you piss it all away.
