LOS ANGELES (AP) A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was sentenced Monday to eight years in federal prison for supervising the backroom beating of a jail visitor who fellow guards testified was handcuffed on the ground and covered in blood.
U.S. District Judge George King ordered former Sgt. Eric Gonzalez taken into custody immediately.
Gonzalez, a 15-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, was found guilty in June of deprivation of civil rights, conspiracy to violate constitutional rights and falsification of records in the 2011 beating of Gabriel Carrillo. Four other deputies have been convicted in the case and await sentencing, while a fifth was indicted in the case last month.
The convictions in Carrillo's beating are part of a federal investigation of civil rights abuses and corruption at the nation's largest sheriff's department.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) --
Gabriel Carrillo's face is battered, swollen and caked with blood. He's handcuffed. His once white t-shirt is blood-soaked and ripped apart.
Jurors viewed the graphic images in a video recorded hours after Carrillo's face-off with Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies. Federal prosecutors say the footage helps prove that three deputies on trial conspired to violate Carrillo's constitutional rights, used unreasonable force and then falsified records to cover it up.
Eyewitness News obtained the video which shows Carrillo being interviewed by Los Angeles Sheriff's Department investigators, including Sgt. Eric Gonzalez.
Jurors have learned Gonzalez was a key figure in the incident. Prosecutors say he directed the attack on Carrillo.

This was truly vicious. It's good to hear this man will actually be spending the next 8 years in prison. Hope he will do the entire sentence before he is released.
