That they think respect and success is a zero sum game, and that they "worked hard" and deserve what they have, while "those others" are getting a free handout that isn't really needed, because those others aren't going to amount to anything anyway?

Because they're solidly stuck in a small black and white world, and have no clue or interest in that anything else that exists in the real world around them?

They're young bullies, willfully ignorant, and full of resentment and delusional hubris.

If they ever grow up (emotionally, that is), they'll be ashamed of the crap they pulled at this point in their lives. But chances are, they're going to stay just as immature as they are, strutting around pretending they're "real men" just because that's what the calendar indicates, and messing with other's lives for no other reason than if someone isn't a recognized "alpha" in the recognized associations these jerks belong to, Gawd knows there's no earthy way that person could be better than them - and that person had better act like it or there needs to be a lesson taught.

Let's not chalk this up to "dumb things college kids do"

People like this are the cause of the unwelcoming atmosphere that greets many people of color on college campuses. It's unacceptable.
