Paris concert gunman was French, known to have Islamist ties: source

Source: Reuters

One of the gunmen who died after attacking a Paris concert hall on Friday had French nationality and was known to have ties with Islamist militants, a source close to the inquiry into a series of deadly attacks in Paris said on Saturday.

The same source said that the gunman's body had been identified by his fingerprints and that he was from the Courcouronnes suburb south of Paris.

Earlier, sources close to the investigation said that a Syrian passport had been found near the body of one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up near a Paris soccer stadium in one of the other attacks.

French media also said that an Egyptian passport had been found near the body of a second suicide bomber at the site.

1. Looks like it was a jihadist "cell" in France and they had traveled to Syria.

I was looking at this in several news sources, including the BBC. The nationality of one of the attackers has been confirmed as French citizen, and the two passports for Egypt and Syria have also been confirmed. This all has very disturbing implications. There's going to be a reaction. This is not good at all! What a horrible, horrible thing to have happened! Fear, suspicions, and tempers are all on the rise now - there and here!

How can passports be found after the person explodes? I had the same question about finding one of the 9/11 bombers passport after the plane exploded and the buildings basically disappeared. Wouldn't paper be one of the first things destroyed? Really, someone who is smarter than I am, please explain it to me in third grade terms.

7. Could even be tatters of a passport - it might not take much to identify country if the paper/text/

script etc are different enough. As to 9/11, I suspect that in the explosion anything on the plane might have been widely dispersed.

I guess its possible they threw their passports aside so that their countries of origin could be known before they blew themselves up. It would be interesting to know if that is what happened.

The passport that blew down from the Twin Towers was kind of hard to believe even though "TV Intelligence Experts" claimed that it wasn't that unusual.

Time to treat Islamists as the enemy force they are. Not ordinary Muslims, but only those demonstrably on the same page as ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Start by canceling the passports of any jihadis that head to Syria to fight. Detain them if they return.
