Dutch opposition to Brussels' emergency fund increases

Source: DutchNews.ml

Dutch MPs are due to debate the establishment of the permanent European emergency fund on Tuesday, but several parties say they will not back the plan.

The leader of the small Christian grouping ChristenUnie said on Monday evening his party will not vote in favour. ChristenUnie cannot agree to contribute €40bn of taxpayers' money without knowing what is going to happen to the money or without having any say over it, Arie Slob is quoted as saying.

He wants finance minister Jan Kees de Jager to return to the negotiating table to ensure countries which contribute to the fund have control over it.

Meanwhile, Geert Wilders is to press ahead with legal action to stop Dutch ratification. because he believes the establishment of the fund hands over too much power to Brussels.

Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders says he will file a lawsuit to block the Netherlands from ratifying the permanent European bailout fund.

Wilders, leader of the Netherlands’ third-largest political party, forced the collapse of the all-conservative government last month by walking out of austerity talks he said would hurt the economy to satisfy European budgetary rules.

The Netherlands is in a mild recession. After Wilders’ walkout, new national elections have been scheduled for September. Wilders, known as an anti-Islam populist, but now campaigning also as a European skeptic, has called for the euro’s abolishment.

The Netherlands’ caretaker Cabinet said Wednesday it plans to ratify the treaty creating the bailout fund, but Wilders said in a statement the treaty surrenders significant sovereign fiscal control and should only be approved after elections.

Not surprisingly, Wilders takes the nationalist, sovereignty stance when it comes to providing funding for the Europe bailout fund. As a far-right politician it would be surprising if he did anything else.

Wilders takes Dutch state to court to head off EU emergency fund

Wilders told the paper his decision to go to court is unique in parliamentary history, but denied it was an election stunt. 'I am defending the interests of the Netherlands,' he told the paper. He earlier failed to get enough support in parliament to call a halt to the ratification process.

The PVV leader has said several times he intends to make the election campaign a referendum on Europe.
