It is official, former Utah lawmaker Jackie Biskupski has made history, after her election as Salt Lake City's first openly gay mayor Tuesday.
Biskupski defeated Mayor Ralph Becker who was running for his third term as mayor. Election results became official Tuesday just after 2 p.m. in a tight race. The challenger defeated the mayor 52.19 percent to 47.81 percent. Biskupski received 17,290 votes to Becker's 15,840.
The win in conservative Utah marks a milestone for the LGBT community in the city that shares world headquarters with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that is opposed to same-sex marriage and homosexual relationships.
... Becker was supportive of same-sex marriage and even performed such marriages when it became legal in Utah to do so.
