Heavy shooting' heard north of Paris

Source: bbc

Heavy shooting has been heard in the northern Paris suburb of Saint Denis, as police continue a hunt for those involved in last Friday's attacks.
Police sources said the shooting was connected to the hunt for fugitives.
Earlier, security sources said surveillance video showed a possible ninth assailant during the attacks in which 129 people died.
The so-called Islamic State (IS) group has said it carried out the attacks on Friday.

Police have surrounded a building in a Paris suburb

"Paris (CNN)Witnesses have reported gunfire amid a police raid in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis as authorities hunt for two suspects from Friday's deadly terrorist attacks who are believed to be at large.

Police blocked off roads early Wednesday in Saint-Denis, which is home to the Stade de France sports stadium where three suicide bombings took place Friday.

CNN affiliate BFMTV reported that police officers have been wounded by gunfire during a raid seeking one of the suspects in the wave of violence across Paris, which killed at least 129 people and wounded hundreds more.

French police wouldn't comment on whether any officers had been shot in the Saint-Denis operation.

BFMTV reported that the police raid was linked to the hunt for the so-called "ninth suspect," who may appear in a video recorded by a witness to the attacks.

Police have been analyzing the video, which shows two gunmen inside a black car linked to the attacks and perhaps a third individual driving the car, French media reported.

Seven of the attackers were killed during the wave of violence Friday night, and an international arrest warrant is already out for one suspect, Salah Abdeslam, a 26-year-old Frenchman. The identity of the possible ninth suspect is unknown."

Citing police sources, French news channel BFMTV said the main target of the police operation in St-Denis was the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, believed to have been in Syria but now apparently in France.

The other two men in holed up with him in the apartment block were believed to be Salah Abdeslam, the subject of a major manhunt since Saturday, and an unidentified “ninth attacker” sought since Tuesday night.

A BFM-TV reporter at the scene said the gunfire had now stopped after a battle that continued for more than two hours, since around 4.30am, at an apartment block on the rue Gabriel Péri in St-Denis, north of Paris.

It is not known whether the “massive” police operation had succeeded in capturing them, whether they were injured, or whether negotiations were underway.

Heavy gunfire' has broken out in a northern suburb of Paris during an anti-terrorist police operation, just five days after the worst terrorist attacks in French history killed 129 people in the capital.
Shots have been being exchanged in the large police operation in Saint-Denis which began at around 4.30am this morning. A special armed response unit took part in the raid and several officers have been hurt.
Reports indicate 'two or three men' have barricaded themselves into an apartment in the centre of the suburb, which is currently surrounded by dozens of police cars with a police helicopter overhead.
Residents have been told to stay in their homes and away from windows and some have been moved to a temporary shelter in the town hall.

It is now just after 7.30am in Paris, meaning the siege in St-Denis has been going on for over three hours.

There are reports of one person dead, and three police officers injured, though apparently not seriously.

Several explosions have been heard in the last few minutes.

At least three military trucks are now on the scene in the centre of St-Denis.

They announced that the commuter stations at Stade de France and Saint Denis was "closed for security reasons," and the main station itself, which was devoid of anything out of the ordinary on Monday morning, looked like an army base this morning. Army soldiers, cops with machine guns, even armed customs agents all over the place, entry to the train track barred unless you had a ticket for the specific train on that particular track.

Scary as it looked, though, the French apparently don't put this kind of weaponry in the hands of just anyone. If there have been any reports of French police gunning down unarmed innocents in the recent past, I haven't seen them.
