Bomb that downed Russian plane in Egypt placed in main cabin: report

Source: Reuters

A bomb that downed a Russian plane in Egypt last month had been placed in the aircraft's main cabin not in the cargo compartment as reported earlier, the daily Kommersant said on Wednesday citing an unnamed source.

The newspaper, citing a source close to the investigation of the crash, said the epicenter of the explosion appeared to have been at the rear of the cabin near the tail section.

"According to a preliminary version, the bomb could have been laid under the passenger seat by the window. Its operation has led to the destruction of the frame and depressurization of the cabin, which had an explosive character," the newspaper said.

Amazing that such small little things could cause that amount of horror. nt. polly7 Nov 2015 #5
It doesn't take much to bring down a fully pressurized plane geomon666 Nov 2015 #6

During a turn around about a dozen people are swarming over an aircraft, cleaning the inside, restocking the galley, unloading and loading cargo, emptying the "honey pot" and otherwise making the airplane is suitable for departure. One more person dressed in the appropriate uniform would have little trouble carrying a small but powerful bomb and placing it in the overhead compartment. This would be especially true if the bomb were inside a carry-on type bag.

Airport security screening has so many holes in it we're lucky there aren't more disasters. The other day someone got a gun past gate screeners. There are plans on the internet for printing 3D plastic handguns.

We've just been damned lucky more airliners haven't been brought down by terrorists.

They would not allow any liquids to be brought into the cabin, even those purchased within secured area.

They hand searched our carry on luggage and would not allow any liquids/gels in cabin.

They asked about what liquids or gels were in our checked bags when we went through security.

At the gate, after searching, they did allow some bags with liquids (unopened bottle of pepto bismal that an elderly passenger had) to be checked into cargo.

They did a pat down of each passenger before we boarded the plane.
