Some U.S. airport workers to strike Wednesday night: union

Airport workers at seven of the busiest U.S. hubs plan to strike beginning Wednesday night over what they say are bad wages and threats against unionizing.
Some 2,000 plane cleaners, baggage handlers and other workers will strike at New York's Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, as well as Newark Liberty, Chicago O'Hare, Boston, Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) told Reuters.
The walkout, which has yet to be announced publicly, comes just before air travel picks up for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was not immediately clear if the action would cause flight delays because airlines often have backup plans to avert disruptions.
The strikers work for companies that U.S. airlines contract for some airport operations. That means pilots, flight attendants and in-house baggage handlers are not taking part in the action.

Last week Bernie rallied with the workers for $15 an hour. Since this is the SEIU and they just endorsed Hillary, might she walk a picket tonight?

(2,252 posts)It all flows upward into the pockets of the latest merger owners. Never, ever does it "trickle down". Best of luck to these Union workers!!!

(994 posts)especially during peak season. It really is something when a multi millionaire democratic politician comes right out and says $15/hr is too much. $12/hr is just right for you but it sure as hell isn't for her! I bet she wouldn't lift an eyelid for $12.

(129,118 posts)which is why SEIU is there trying to get locals organized. These are contracted staff for these airports. Several of these airport worker groups here in Philly (who plan to participate in the work stoppage this year) testified in front of our City Council last year ahead of a similar work stoppage at that time, a year ago this month.
