Jeb Bush calls for use of ‘overwhelming force,’ including ground troops, against ISIS
Source: Washington Post
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush on Wednesday called for "overwhelming force" to be used against the Islamic State terror group, including the deployment of ground troops.
"The United States should not delay in leading a global coalition to take out ISIS with overwhelming force," Bush said in a speech at The Citadel, the famous military college. "As the words of French President Hollande have made clear, the United States will not be alone in galvanizing this global effort. Militarily, we need to intensify our efforts in the air and on the ground."
"While air power is essential, it alone cannot bring the results we seek," Bush said. "The United States in conjunction with our NATO allies and more Arab partners will need to increase our presence on the ground."
He said that the ultimate scope of a military response to the Islamic State "should be in line" with what military commanders recommend. He added that "the bulk of these ground troops will need to come from local forces that we have built workable relationships with."

I swear, part of me thinks they just want boots on the ground so a few Americans get captured and at least one gets killed in some terrible, medieval way on video that FOX can run on a loop until after the election

Jeb Bush, you are an idiot plain and simple..... Anyone advocating ground troops to defeat ISIS is completely out of touch. This is NOT a uniformed war. These fighters are civilians that will simply fade into the Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian woodwork.

(33,345 posts)Without Ground Troops?
The Pesh Merga are already fighting them on the ground. Assad's forces are fighting them on the ground. Those are local forces.
The tactics employed to this point haven't eliminated the threat - their operational capacity has ramped up: the Russian Jet, Beirut, Paris.
If you know how to defeat them I'd like to hear the plan. And "Prosecute the Bush Admin" or "Get out of the Middle East" isn't going to do it.
My best idea is Quarantine.

(36,437 posts)This will be the issue that gets Bush back in the race.
Right now, something close to 70% of the public opposes ground forces to fight ISIS in Syria. This will soften to 50% opposition by Christmas, then down again to 45% or so by January 15. By then there will be a ceasefire between Assad and all other rebel forces and the narrative that airstrikes alone will be ineffective will have inundated the public. There will also have been at least one additional ISIS strike in Europe. The French and Germans will announce that an expeditionary force from NATO is necessary to defend their borders. The US will grudgingly agree.
There will be a force of 150,000 French and US ground forces in Syria by the end of May.
And Bush will be the nominee.
