(Reuters) - A magnitude 4.1 quake hit near the north Oklahoma town of Medford on Friday, the second temblor in two days to hit the area where energy extraction takes place.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 4.6, struck at 4:40 p.m. at a shallow depth of 4.9 miles (8 km) with the epicenter 9 miles (15 km), north-northwest of Medford. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck northern Oklahoma early on Thursday, rattling residents out of their beds and shaking the ground across a 100-mile (160-km) radius that included the city of Tulsa and the state of Kansas.

The state's oil and gas regulator, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC), moved within hours on Thursday to implement additional curbs on the use of saltwater disposal wells that scientists have linked to a sharp rise in seismic activity in the state.

They could go through a thousand of these, and they'll never publicly complain.

It's a little like that "ventriloquist" scene in Killer Klowns from Outer Space: if the old cop is the Oklahoma voter, the clown's the oil industry.

I remember reading some years ago about the high-handed - if not despotic - ways of the late Congressman Bill Janklow. Lots of bodies buried there, no doubt.

They want to kill the government, the only thing powerful enough to make them do what is right....how dumb can you cons get?Human misery is your speciality. Who was it that said there was no such thing as climate warming? You cons that sucked up to the well to do and powerful. Due to a more warm planet the Puget Sound has algae is growing due to the higher temperature that is preventing the crabbing industry from harvesting. And you crabbers that vote Republican ought to examine your minds, you asked for it. Even if the planet is naturally warming all the carbon released by the oil industry, etc hasn't helped one bit. Is profit more important than a healthy planet and humans? Think! Or is it you want to profit and to hell with what ever has to live after you die. Take a good HONEST look at what you are supporting if you have a moral sense health life is more important than the profit motive.

How one US state went from two quakes a year to 585, AFP, 9/20/15

The central US state of Oklahoma has gone from registering two earthquakes a year to nearly two a day and scientists point to a controversial culprit: wastewater injection wells used in fracking.

... As of last month, Oklahoma has already experienced more than 600 quakes strong enough to rattle windows and rock cars. The biggest was a 4.5-magnitude quake that hit the small town of Crescent.

.... From 1975 to 2008, the state experienced anywhere from zero to three earthquakes a year which registered at 3.0 or higher. Then the numbers jumped: there were 20 in 2009, 35 in 2010, 64 in 2011, 35 in 2012, 109 in 2013 and 585 in 2014.

Even the Oklahoma governor has accepted the link between fracking (particularly the injection of waste water into the ground) and earthquakes.
