Mayor of Alaska's Capital Found Dead; Police Investigate

Source: ABC 13 Eyewitness News

JUNEAU, AK -- The newly-elected mayor of Alaska's capital city has been found dead.

Juneau police in a statement identified the man as 70-year-old Stephen "Greg" Fisk, who handily defeated incumbent Merrill Sanford in the October election to become mayor.

A man found Fisk's body at a residence Monday afternoon and alerted authorities. Police say Fisk was pronounced dead at the scene.

Circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately known. Police spokesman Erann Kalwara says the death was unattended, but couldn't immediately say if officers suspected foul play.

In Alaska, skeletons aren't necessarily damaging to your political career - as a very long list of crooked Alaskan politicians can attest. He just won an election so he's probably pretty happy. Maybe if his wife just died, or he's close to the anniversary of her death...

I'm going with either natural causes or something related to the fact it's winter in Alaska and he's a senior citizen.

(at one point in 2013, it looked as though the downtown supermarket was going to close...instead, it was sold to another chain)/
As far as I could see, he was in excellent shape and excellent spirits.

This is a huge shock.

During the 2015 Juneau mayoral race, Fisk stated that he generally supports raising the minimum wage. Fisk voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Alaska. Fisk also supported enacting a ban on discrimination against the gay community in housing and other public accommodation, and stated that he believes human activity is contributing to climate change.[11]

the man died yesterday.

and he was a Juneau resident, not the Matanuska Valley where the Palin clan resides.

very different places and 850 miles apart.

and they're devastated.

People need to get out and see more of this nation - don't assume every Alaskan is a GOP teabilly sucking at the oil-stipend teat. Palin doesn't define Alaska.

It’s thought that Fisk suffered from some sort of heart problem and fell, Juneau Police Chief Bryce Johnson told reporters Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The 70-year-old’s injuries were consistent with a fall, he said.
