Chicago Police Superintendent Is Fired
Source: NY Times
Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired Chicagos police superintendent on Tuesday, after the citys police department came under fire for resisting, for more than a year, release of a video showing an officer shooting a teenager 16 times.
"He has become an issue rather thean dealing with an issue, Mr. Emanuel said of the police chief, Garry F. McCarthy."
Well, looks like they found their scapegoat in this. I hope there is now serious change in that horrendous police department, but one can only hope.

(796 posts)I mean a 5 million dollar payoff is not insignificant, even for a big city. Rahm needs to go too.

(6,241 posts)to make some waves. If they can prove the cops deleted the video from Burger King, that's destruction of evidence. Anyone involved should go to jail.

(12,882 posts)Not afraid to go after this weasel of a mayor. NO ONE deserves time behind bars more than this farce of a leader. That this ass hat was WHCOS is likely a good part of why Obama is the hope 'n change BS artist that he is.

I totally agree with you about the mayor - but -That last part was rather harsh for the DEMOCRATIC Underground. Have you been listening to right-wing crap?

I can't express my opinion here - even when I feel swindled by this administration? How's your single payer working for you? How's that cessation of illegal wars (not to mention the ongoing drone killing spree) working for you? What's the TPP gonna do to improve your life, and WHY COULDN'T the POTUS find "comfortable shoes to wear while walking with labor demonstrators??? Those are just the starter questions. And beyond those queries, there's which of those matters are going to change with Hillary taking over? None - is my guess.
AwRight - I changed things to keep the DEA (Dialogue Enforcement Agency) from staging a raid on our home. Zat make things more palatable?

Freedom of speech is only about the government's ability to restrict speech, not any private citizen (or website).

(2,382 posts)... of what is acceptable speech? I'm a Liberal down to my DNA, but if some on Democratic Underground do not wish to practice democratic principles, such as allowing open discussions on some of this administration's serious shortcomings, then we have a problem.
I, for one, adored Obama... until he hired Summers and Geithner, and it became clear that he was in Goldman Sachs pocket from Day One. He's accomplished some great things, but he's also promoted the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and THAT, my dear Eggplant, cannot be forgiven.

(3,911 posts)If you'll go back and read this thread, you'll see that I was merely commenting on an earlier poster's "first amendment rights" argument. And all I did was point out that, no, the first amendment is completely irrelevant here on DU. The first amendment protects people from restrictions on their speech BY THE GOVERNMENT. Do you see any government folks running DU? No? Huh. Guess 1A really doesn't apply then. I believe that Skinner is the final arbiter of what is acceptable speech here.
As for what I consider acceptable speech, I made zero claims regarding MY opinion of the earlier poster's opinions. And in this post, I'm also making zero claims regarding MY opinion of your absurdly obtuse, holier-than-thou straw man rant. None at all. Nope.
I have no interest in discussing your opinion of our President, nor am I interested in the earlier poster's opinion of him either, and I won't be drawn into it. You simply aren't worth my time.
You have a nice day, now.

(3,256 posts)I have no way of knowing if Garry Mcarthy had anything directly to do with the cover up, but retirement at age 56 with full pension is a situation most of us would want to be in. The racism and corruption of the police is endemic and getting rid of one boss for another won't change it. It's just Rahm's way of preserving his ass. Burge got 4 years and is now comfortably retired in Florida.

I do wonder how BO feels about his dear friend and supporter.
If RE is allowed to leave office without prison time, I'm sure the Establishment Democrats and Bankers can make his exit very pleasant.

(3,962 posts)leadership that really starts to clean up the department. My recommendation would be to appoint top departmental echelons from outside CPD. Establish from day one that continued service requires real change.
