Rudy Giuliani: Some New York Muslims celebrated 9/11, but Donald Trump 'exaggerating'

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday that while there was some celebrating by American Muslims in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, Donald Trump is "exaggerating" when he said thousands of Muslims were cheering the attacks.

"We did have some celebrating, that is true," Giuliani told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on CNN's "New Day." "We had pockets of celebration some in Queens, some in Brooklyn -- 10, 12, 30, 40" people.

Giuliani recounted hearing about a Muslim-owned candy store where some Muslims were cheering the attacks and were beaten up by children from a neighboring housing development.

None of the things I heard that were going on in my area were never proven and I think they were just rumor mongering by frightened people.

I no longer live in Brooklyn but from what I understand the NYPD protected mosques and Islamic centers for fear of retaliation. In my area Sikhs, who can be easily mistaken for Muslims, made sure that everyone knew that they hated Osama Bin Laden, posting pictures of Bin Laden in a bullseye and flying American flags in their stores and gas stations.

I don't know if the local talk radio guys were spreading these rumors. Trump apparently used a heavily added Curtis Sliwa clip as proof but according to Sliwa they left out the part about him saying that these rumors turned out to not be true.

Some people--apparently many people--of course are going to believe rumor over reality. These things take on a life of their own.

it was nothing like the mayor said. basically a bunch of guys walked into a candy store and beat the crap out of the owner. there was a mosque in the back of the store. nothing about a celebration. it was the only candy store incident they could find. kornacki said they reached out to guliani to find out if that was the incident he was talking about or if there was another candy store incident that went unreported.

don't hold your breath waiting for that callback, steve

Why not ask, why do they hate the US that much?

Maybe b/c they hold the US responsible for much of their misery..duh.

Celebrating is a horrible thing to see anyone take part in, I just don't understand
why some are defensive about who took part in it and why.

That Trump would prefer Americans to believe these people hate us for our
freedoms and all that other bullshit about religion as motive is not surprising,
he's merely turning up the fear factor for votes..looks like it works for too
many blind fools.

It feels like there's spin by both sides here - Trump "thousands celebrated in NYC!" vs. Democrats "no one celebrated, how dare you!" With this weird undercurrent of rumors & anecdotes running underneath it.

lie. I have read opinions expressed here that are in line with his mindset.

Fact checking usually helps, and even a few Republicans have voiced
their disapproval. Yet as you know the MSM does a lousy job, so the
conversations become riddled less than an objective viewpoint.

Our foreign policies have been disastrous for a long time, way before
Iraq. I feel it is fair to be honest about peoples reactions, even if it
makes both sides uncomfortable...just do it honestly.

It's an absurd idea so it requires proof or it is bullshit.

It seems to me that muslim Americans were living in fear after 9/11, not dancing in the streets.

I was reading a lot of political websites of all different areas of thought during the PP attacks. One site had commenters saying "I don't give a #$%# what happens to baby killers."

The Trump thing is an attempt to discredit all Muslims and broad brush paint them as our enemies. "Our friends shared our grief that day. Our enemies laughed and celebrated the deaths."
That's why it's important to them for this to have happened. It intersects the war on terror and the refugee issue. "We had people celebrating 9/11, and you want to bring more of them here?"
