Divers Recover Items During Search of Lake for Evidence in San Bernardino Massacre
Source: NBC Los Angeles
Divers could be seen recovering at least two possible pieces of evidence during Friday's second day of searching underwater, as part of follow up investigation of the San Bernardino mass shooting that claimed 14 lives.
The FBI declined to comment on what was found, but Thursday had indicated it was acting on leads that the identified killers, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, had gone to the area of Seccombe Park some time before they were killed in a shootout with law enforcement.
Investigators have been seeking the digital trail of communications and planning for the attack.

From a distance, one of the items recovered from the lake appeared to be of a size consistent with a hard drive. The items were kept immersed and packed for followup investigation.

(15,512 posts)But it was a strange day. I just checked the map and it would have to have occurred immediately after the shootings at 11:00, and they would have to have stopped there on the way back to their apt. in Redlands.
What's hard to imagine is that they could have driven their black SUV from the IRC to Secombe Lake to Redlands without being apprehended as the entire region was riveted on the story by 11:15 am.

(6,241 posts)and out of the place in 4 minutes, because that's how long it took for the first cop to get there. Could have slipped out of the immediate area and gotten to the lake fairly quickly. It's only a 7 minute drive to the lake.
The police got the first 911 calls at 11am. If you figure 30 seconds from the first shot to the first 911 call, that would give them 4 1/2 minutes to do the damage they did and get out of there. They could have easily made it to the lake 3 minutes after the first cop arrives on the scene.

(101,361 posts)Yes, they are the identified killers. That doesn't tell us anything about timing.

(101,361 posts)It's pointing out that those 2 have been identified - not still just 'suspected' or anything.

(15,512 posts)More accurately a perfect passive participle. Yes, your reading is supportable, but why would his wife have been with him before the shooting? She had a 6-month old child to take care of.

(101,361 posts)Yes, 'identified' means they have been identified before the article was written.
They could have dropped the hard drive/whatever in the lake on the way to the attack, or they could have done it a day before or earlier - again, leaving the child with the grandmother.

(15,512 posts)The day or days before seem unlikely as (a) the SUV was rented and (b) they would have had time to dispose of the drives less conspicuously. But if it was just before, when and where did they put on their gear? In the car? And if they were wearing it at the park, in view of scores if not hundreds of municipal employees, why weren't they reported and apprehended on the way back to Redlands after the shooting? It's six miles at least.

When you do something like that you have to know there will be a high degree of probability you will killed or captured at the scene. Makes no sense to wait to do it after.
