Freak storm in North Atlantic to lash UK, may push temperatures 70 degrees above normal at North Pol
Source: Washington Post
The vigorous low pressure system that helped spawn devastating tornadoes in the Dallas area on Saturday is forecast to explode into a monstrous storm over Iceland by Wednesday.
...snip...
Computer model simulations show the storm, sweeping across the north central Atlantic today, rapidly intensifying along a jet stream ripping above the ocean at 230 mph.
The storms pressure is forecast by the GFS model to plummet more than 50 millibars in 24 hours between Monday night and Tuesday night, easily meeting the criteria of a bomb cyclone (a drop in pressure of at least 24 mb in 24 hours),
...snip...
Environmental blogger Robert Scribbler notes this storm will be linked within a daisy chain of two other powerful North Atlantic low pressure systems forming a truly extreme storm system. He adds: The Icelandic coast and near off-shore regions are expected to see heavy precipitation hurled over the island by 90 to 100 mile per hour or stronger winds raging out of 35-40 foot seas. Meanwhile, the UK will find itself in the grips of an extraordinarily strong southerly gale running over the backs of 30 foot swells.

The purpose of hurricanes (if one can assign a purpose for a natural event) is to pump the heat out of the equatorial regions and send it to the polar regions. It is a natural extrapolation from the laws of thermodynamics.
First law of thermodynamics: When energy passes, as work, as heat, or with matter, into or out from a system, its internal energy changes in accord with the law of conservation of energy. Equivalently, perpetual motion machines of the first kind are impossible.
Second law of thermodynamics: In a natural thermodynamic process, the sum of the entropies of the interacting thermodynamic systems increases. Equivalently, perpetual motion machines of the second kind are impossible.
Conditions in the North Atlantic this year didn't permit the "average" amount of formation of hurricanes, and so the heat was bottled up, and now finally found a means to escape the bottle and head for the Arctic.

It's unseasonably warm, and we've got already got flooding across Lancashire, Cumbria, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and I think even in parts of Northumberland.
There's quite a few threads on the subject in the UK forum.

(37,365 posts)None of these things are actually happening. Obama is making this stuff up. The computers that make these model simulations are well-known left wing computers. If one of these fake storms shows up at my house, I'll shoot it. Unless that storm promises to vote for Donald Trump.

(1,859 posts)They also don't want to work and just want hand outs - all of them. And the Muslims hate us for our Freedom.
The thing is, with the unprecedented rain we're getting in storms now, we actually can say the sky is falling.

(14,747 posts)Ever since he became leader our stance has very much been when the news is nasty or scaremy, dont think, just blame Jeremy, Guardian editor Katharine Viner told us. And the floods are a perfect excuse to carry on.
It may seem strange that an ostensibly left-wing broadsheet is dedicated to undermining the most left-wing Labour leader in a generation, she said. But surely its weirder that the shadow cabinet are doing the same.

(14,747 posts)York gets flooded quite often, but the current floods have been even worse than usual, thanks to a key part of York's flood defenses failing.

(595 posts)Basically farmers are paid more to clear their land but planting groves of trees and other good ecological practices can reduce flooding and/or prevent it.

(101,361 posts)This severe flood warning has been issued due to the structural failure of Tadcaster Bridge over the river Wharfe in Tadcaster. Significant flooding is expected in the Tadcaster area. Those in this area are advised to evacuate immediately. The situation is serious and there is a significant risk to life. Please follow the advice of the emergency services and officials in the area....
The collapsed bridge at Tadcaster was c.1700, widened in 1791 by York architect John Carr who also worked at @fairfax_house. Tragic loss.

And we've got yet more storms to come, which will only make things much worse. Apparently Ireland has been hit badly overnight.

... The threat of further flooding in Cork remains as the ESB intends to increase the flow of water through the Inniscarra Dam to 250 cumecs (cubic metres per second) between 9am and midday on Wednesday leading to increased flooding downstream...
... South Galway bore the brunt of flooding in the west, with river gauges expected to rise further over the coming days...

... Limerick City and County Council said there has been no significant flooding in the county as a result of overnight rainfall but that water levels along the Lower River Shannon are continuing to increase. Water levels on the river rose by some 11cm at Castleconnell and Montpelier.
The ESB said the flow of water through Parteen Weir, which regulates water flow through Ardnacrusha dam, would remain at 440 (cubic metres per second) on Wednesday and that the situation would be reviewed again on Thursday. The levels in Lough Derg may reach 2009 levels in the coming days and, as a result, the flow through Parteen Weir may increase to 2009 levels (up to 500 cumecs) in the coming days, it said. This level of water flow will have increased associated flooding to land and property in the vicinity of the Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir including the areas of Springfield, Montpelier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. ...
