Ann Coulter Now Suggests Ted Cruz Isn't A ‘Natural Born Citizen’
Source: Talking Points Memo
Conservative pundit Ann Coulter, who once dismissed birthers as "cranks," suggested Wednesday that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) may be ineligible for the presidency because he is not a natural born citizen."
In a series of tweets, Coulter, an ardent anti-immigration advocate, suggested that Cruz was not a "natural born citizen," a requirement to run for President outlined in the Constitution:
NYT: Cruz was born outside the U.S. to 1 American parent: "Under the Constitution this makes him a 'natural born citizen.' Absolutely false

Absolute bullshit, of course. Cruz not only is entirely eligible to run & serve as president, as Democrats, he's exactly who we want the Republicans to nominate. His showing nationally would be almost Goldwateresque.

(4,695 posts)They were living in Canada, with neither parent born in Canada. Laws in the 1970s were different from the easy street N-600 we have today. For instance, about 10 years ago there were about 5 forms or copies of forms that a person had to turn in to a College Registrar; let's say in a Tennessee junior college, before admittance was allowed.
I believe that there is a law suite looking into just this situation.
Cruz did live in Texas in earlier years. He said that his father, deserted his mother and him in Calgary Alberta, Canada.

For the record, a cute little American baby.

Can't stand Ann Coulter, actually find her to be a pox on society. But, Ted was born in Canada, his father is Cuban and his mother was not in Canada on an official US charter.
So, how is he eligible to be president?

(135,425 posts)Attitudes about "natural born" have genuinely morphed down the years, though.
People were convinced that Christian Herter, who was a charismatic fellow in his day, a MA governor and a SECSTATE, was "ineligible" to run for the Presidency because he was born in PARIS of expatriate American parents.
This was pretty much accepted as gospel.
The argument really only started getting refined in recent years, when people tried to insist that John McCain, born on "US soil" in an American Naval Hospital in Panama, a child of an active duty Naval officer and an American mother, was "born abroad." The pushback against that assertion was pretty vigorous, given that Dad was serving his country at the time and we owned the terra firma where Johnny was born.
People had the idea that if your parent wasn't on "official business" for the government, you'd best be born in the USA.
The view on this HAS changed down the years...!
I love the fact that Cruz is taking shit for it. I know that's probably unkind, but I don't care. I've no respect for that weasel.
In fact, I'd LOVE to see someone take it to the Supreme Court. Why not?

(135,425 posts)citizen" has changed in that time.
It used to be, if your parents were willingly and WILFULLY absenting themselves from America, like Christian Herter's "expatriate" parents, that the child was "blamed" for their parents' bad citizenship by being denied the Natural Born appellation. Basically, the attitude was, if you are going to be running around the world having children, and you're not on gub-mint biz-niz, then those little rugrats aren't OURS!!!!
It was a very COMMON belief and attitude, and it is still held by many today. Hell, if they can try and claim that BHO, born in HI, is "foreign," then "Canadian Cruz" Ted deserves a much higher bar!!
TeddyR
(2,493 posts)Or at least it isn't 100% clear. Most cases dealing with the "natural born citizen" issue deal with individuals born in the US to non-citizens. Here's a piece from factcheck.org that briefly discusses Cruz's eligibility. http://www.factcheck.org/2015/03/ted-cruzs-presidential-eligibility/
And note, there is a difference between "natural born citizen" and just plain old "citizen." For example, someone naturalized after moving to the US is a "citizen" but not a "natural born citizen."

(10,159 posts)IIRC, one of the birther arguments was that even though Obama was born in Kenya (hey, it's their argument, not mine) to a US mother he was not a natural born citizen because his father was a Kenyan citizen. Or something like that. I do admire Coulter a teensy bit for applying the same logic to Cruz.

(32,733 posts)prior to giving birth to Ted. The U.S. wouldn't have any way of knowing that, would they? After all, what happens in ___, stays in ___.
Did Ted's mom become a Canadian citizen prior to his birth, and if so, did the U.S. allow dual citizenship at that time?
I dunno... "I think it's worth looking into..."
