Armed Oregon Occupiers Scrub Meeting With Town, Tell FBI to Leave

Source: NBC News

A group of armed protesters who have occupied an Oregon national wildlife refuse building for nearly two weeks said a planned meeting with the community likely won't happen Friday, and called on the FBI to leave the area.

"They're fear mongering. We want them to quit acting this way, quit being provocateurs, quit acting as militia and stirring up fear — there's no need for that," Arizona rancher LaVoy Finicum, who has acted as a spokesperson for the group, said Friday.

"We can get on with the business and get out of here quicker if you go home," Finicum told reporters.

-snip-

The group had planned to meet with the community and explain their actions and timetable for withdrawal Friday evening, but Finicum said Harney County Judge Steve Grasty has prevented them from securing a meeting place.

There is no way the FBI would have held out this long and allowed this much damage to occur if it were BLM or Occupy-anything. They would have stormed the place within 6 hours of it starting.
The only thing I can think of is the Feds are giving these people lots of rope to hang themselves with. Recording every action these people take to rack up huge prison sentences. At least, I hope that's the strategy.

including OWS at Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan?

It was a lot longer than two weeks.

You are certainly entitled to believe law enforcement should be more aggressive in Oregon, although my disagreement with such an unpredictable and potentially explosive strategy and support for existing patient efforts in well-known, using groups like Occupy or BLM as the standard is counterproductive, and from a legal and policy perspective, actually may support significantly more restraint with the militias.

The Oregon stand-off should be viewed from the perspective of proper and safe policing techniques, not whether you agree with the politics of the offenders.

At what point did they claim they were taking public lands from the government and the people indefinitely?

At what time did they steal vehicles, break into computers, break down fences with stolen equipment, and build roads through wildlife sanctuaries?

Bullshit comparison is bullshit.

The occupy protests were not an armed occupation of a federal building. The occupy demonstrations didn't involve going through federal computer systems accessing personal information. The occupy demonstrations also were dealt with much more aggressively as arrests were made, people were assaulted, undercover police were used to try to incite protesters into commiting crimes, and people were even tortured.

OTOH, I think that our president is being, as usual, patient and cunning; martyrdom is *EXACTLY* what they want. Or any federal actions that will stir up the base. These assclowns want to start Civil War 2; a trial of the survivors after a bloody SWAT raid or SEAL team smackdown (as much as I would LOVE to see it) would strengthen their side. Fortunately our President is not obliging them.

If it were BLM, the shooting would have been over so fast the media would still be getting there.

Terrorism actually works NOT by overthrowing the ruling group. It works by causing the government to overreact which then arouses the populace to overthrow the government. If the government doesn't play into it, you still have a violent outburst but you don't have a flashpoint, a bloody flag or martyr(s).

Assuming that the leadership of BLM has a modicum of polciical al competence, the places they disrupt have been because those places create the need for an immediate reaction. Vanilla Isis was more about the symbolism and the target audience, rural heavily white America, BLM disruptions have been the urban core IIRC.

No one would be allowed in, so they would quickly run out of snacks and lube, and they would pretty much have to leave. My goal would be to avoid bloodshed between them and law enforcement. I think that would feed into their message, and could even make them into martyrs. If they turned on each other, then that would be different. Law enforcement and reporters would camp outside. If they came out shooting, then everyone would see that they are the aggressors, as opposed to "peaceful occupiers," or however some would see them. Of course some would take their side no matter what they did, but I suspect that number can be greatly diminished.

If these were BLM we would be talking about the nice music they had at their funerals

Yes, the double standard is hard to miss, in my opinion.

While I was reading it I thought to myself "wait, who's this talking?" only to realize it was one of the goofball squatters talking. Then it hit me that they seem really, really angry that the government HASN'T provoked anything, which is what they were hoping for all along and so now they have to put this meme out there that they are being "provocateurs". (I'm surprised they even understand the word.) I do think that the longer this goes on the more ridiculous they look and the more they're ridiculed. The only ones listening to their garbage are people just like them, and I so want to believe that those types of people are in the minority.

A helicopter --borrowed from the Nat'l Guard--should fly back and forth over the militia guys. Land a couple of times far enough away so one can't
see what is going on. Then hover. A 'copter makes a whole lot of wind, blows a lot of snow and dust and weeds around. It is very unpleasant.

Militia types--ordinarily very courageous and god-fearing-- are very scared of helicopters--especially black ones. Their imaginations will run rampant.

Return at dusk.

A second heli should go to the Bundy ranch in Nevada. Oh, Jesus... what is up? (Don't worry about the poor cellphone reception; news will spread via every jack rabbit from Oregon to Nevada.)

These guys have achieved their goals. They will be martyrs in one form or another to every fringe radical anti-government group out there. Forget reality. These guys have their own reality. This will be just another piece of fiction they can use to stoke their hatred and fuel their membership drive for more like-minded nuts to push some ridiculous agenda.

They seem to WANT a war with the government.

They should be seen as the dangerous threat they are. It might on some level seem comical now--but what grows out of this sort of fantasy will be anything but that. These are not people in touch with reality. That can lead to some dangerous groups and activity.

They want to take over government lands, buildings, anything.

On what authority? I don't want them to do anything of the sort. If the government stormed in and took their land they'd be screaming and shooting in every direction. But apparently they(as good patriots--in their minds)have some sort of moral high ground and can do as they please.

I don't think so.

Jan 2016

I've been advocating for patience with these fools from the beginning. That's partly because I actually do have a small amount of skin in the game: I use the facility they've occupied a couple time a year, most years. I don't want to see it badly damaged (it's necessary for maintaining the refuge).

But enough is enough. Stalking and threatening locals. presuming to order law enforcement about, damaging the refuge...enough! It's time for Governor Brown to take control of the situation and mobilize National Guard units. Surround the facility with armored vehicles (and attack helicopters hovering at range), order everyone else out and all access to the seditionists cut off, and issue an ultimatum: surrender or the tanks and helicopters open fire from range. Nothing these yahoos have will do more than scratch the paint of an Abrams tank (or reach out to where an Apache gunship can fire from). No danger to troops.

I have almost zero doubt that despite the big talk, they'll cave (and quickly) once they're staring at the business end of an Abrams main gun of two.
