Interestingly, there was not a swarm of armed officers there. Just three FBI agents in ball caps and a few deputies. #Oregonstandoff

At the end of the convo, Ammon asked FBI negotiator if he's LDS. Negotiator said no. "I lost a bet," said Bundy.

Ammon said the FBI contacted him yesterday about negotiations. So he showed up today at FBI HQ to talk in person 1/2
The negotiator wasn't there in person though, so Bundy talked with him by phone at the blockaded gate. 2/2 #Oregonstandoff

I have heard from Mormons themselves that Mormon church encourages their young men to apply for federal and state jobs after mission if there's no job waiting for them at home afterwards.

Nothing against them personally, and this is anecdotal - but in my experience around government and government contract work environments, when a supervisor is LDS, the workforce is usually at least half LDS. It becomes very obvious the longer one works in this situation, even though it never affects the quality of the tasks being done or the assignments. It just makes for a slightly uncomfortable work environment to those who don't belong. Enough so that this is almost a "rule of thumb" consideration for me when considering changing a position.
The only exception to this I have found is where there is no local hiring process (as in deployed units).

They didn't drink or gamble so they were seen as relatively less prone to corruption, and their cultural conservatism and theologically motivated racism were entirely compatible with the FBI's own biases through at least the 70s.

The mob employed them in casinos for the same reason. (These days Vietnamese-Americans are the casino employee of choice. 100 years ago it was received wisdom that Jewish-Americans were the best basketball players. Positive stereotypes are every bit as weird and as changable as the negative sort.)

The Latest: Leader of Armed Group Says He's Speaking to FBI

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BURNS, Ore. — Jan 21, 2016, 3:58 PM ET

The latest on an armed group that took over buildings at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon (all times local):

12:45 p.m.

The leader of an armed group that has occupied a national wildlife refuge in Oregon for nearly three weeks says he has begun speaking with federal authorities.

Ammon Bundy went to the airport Thursday in Burns, Oregon, close to where federal officials have set up a staging area.

With reporters watching, he spoke on the phone, apparently with an FBI negotiator. The conversation was streamed online by another member of Bundy's group.

Bundy said his group is "not going to escalate" the situation, and he agreed to speak with authorities again Friday.

Bundy: We need Twinkies. And beer.
G-Man: Ok, we will send them right away. Now, you need to vacate.
Bundy: Vacate? When there's Twinkies and beer being delivered? Someone has to be there to receive them.
G-Man: Oh, good point. Lemme think about this, and I'll call you later.

The real opponents here are not the feds against the Bundys, this a proxy war of the Kochs and other ALEC members against us, We the People.

The inept Bundy group has become a focus of disgust and ridicule. Not only is this foolishness NOT encouraging other wingnuts to further the Koch agenda by emulating the Bundys, but the would-be plutocrats who are encouraging insurrection are losing the media war to the people.

Well done, Obama administration. Keep it up.

In the Bundy clan, what you are seeing is what they are really about. This group has a twisted ideal of how our Government works. This bunch dates back to 1847 and the Mormon Invasion of the Utah territory. And the creation of the State called Deseret. Their ideals are so twisted in reality. Poster Children for Fake Noise.

FBI Issues Statement on Wildlife Refuge Occupation In Oregon
By: T. Grant Benson (Breaking911 Newsroom) January 21, 2016 | 6:45 PM

“The FBI recognizes that many in the community have questions about why we are here and our role in helping to end the occupation of the wildlife refuge. We are here to work closely with Sheriff Ward and our local, state and federal partners to protect the safety and welfare of this community. This occupation has caused tremendous disruption and hardship for the people of Harney County, and our response has been deliberate and measured as we seek a peaceful resolution. Due to safety considerations for both those inside the refuge as well as the law enforcement officers involved, we will not be releasing any specifics with regards to the law enforcement response.”

14. Bundy in convo with FBI
Thu Jan 21, 2016, 10:02 PM
Jan 2016
The negotiator pressed for what Bundy wanted to see done with the refuge. Bundy said it should be turned over to Harney County officials.

He said his group wouldn't leave until practical steps had been taken to get the refuge out of federal control and ensure the refuge buildings were never again used by the federal government.

We all know this is not going to happen, so where do they go from here?

How would that get done, the agent asked.

"I don't know," Bundy said. "We could put more thought to that."

Bundy, as he would several times through the conversation, said his group had no intention of resorting to violence to settle the issues.

"We're not going to escalate anything," he said. "You would be the only ones to escalate this."

But Bundy had questions of his own. He asked by what right was the FBI involved in the refuge occupation.

"Are you here under authority of the sheriff?" Bundy asked.

When the negotiator said the sheriff had asked for federal help, Bundy responded, "You do not have the people's authority to be here."

In measured tones, the negotiator told him, "The sheriff has asked for our assistance."

As the negotiator repeatedly cycled back to the issue of how to end the standoff, Bundy was equally insistent that action had to happen – not just talk.

One action was paramount to ending the standoff, he said: "You can bring the Hammonds back home to their families."

I seriously don't think this is going anywhere either, because if it did, then the Bundy's won, and we aren't supposed to negotiate with terrorists.

As mentioned before, cutting off the park's utilities and cellphone access, prevent easy ingress and egress to the compound and other methods of making life uncomfortable would seem logical.

They could also play loud music like they do to keep the Guantanamo prisoners awake, occasionally read a list of the pending charges against the occupiers, retrieve the keys to that damned bulldozer (or disable it somehow) and, if worse comes to worse, let the birders loose on them. Oh, the humanity!

I'm not there -- thankfully, as it's much warmer here in the desert -- so I don't know the full details of the situation. All I do know is Bundy said they'd leave if the community asked them to, and when the community made it abundantly clear the terrorists weren't welcome Bundy and his crew -- didn't leave.

I don't see a violent end to this unless the terrorists start something when the law shows up to arrest them. Or the birders take matters into their own hands and make raptor bait of these turkeys.

Negotiations Begin With Bundy And FBI
by Amanda Peacher and John Sepulvado OPB | Jan. 21, 2016

... “I want to keep the dialogue going. We want to work together with you,” the negotiator said to Bundy. ....

“We’re glad to open a dialogue with him,” said Craig Overby, one of the three FBI agents present for the conversation. “What we have in common is we want a peaceful resolution. And I think he wants that too.”

The FBI would not comment on any plans for future negotiations with the occupiers, but said in a statement that its response has been “deliberate and measured.”

Malheur is now equated with militia idiocy. Even the GOP and its candidates won't touch it with a 100-foot pole.

If we sent in our trained killers, and that is what a "SWAT team" is, and tragedy ensued, Malheur would become enshrined with Waco and Ruby Ridge, and like those it would feed the militia movement and spark more extremist acting out, instead of just embarrassing militia types and chalking up a loss for the manipulators who are encouraging them from behind the scenes.

The Bundy crew's been trying to figure out how to get out of there with some kind of dignity for a couple weeks now. No need to murder them to get rid of them.
