The Latest: Prosecutor says plan would bring executions soon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — 10 a.m.

A Los Angeles County prosecutor says California could begin executions immediately if it adopts regulations involving use of a single lethal drug.

Michele Hanisee, vice president of the county's Association of Deputy District Attorneys, says 18 inmates have exhausted their death penalty appeals, and the state has the means to resume executions for the first time in a decade.

Hanisee spoke Friday at a public hearing on the state corrections department's plan to use a single lethal injection to meet legal requirements amid a national shortage of execution drugs. Authorities could choose from four drugs.

Opponents say the state is hiding how the drugs would be obtained and the effects of two drugs that have never before been used in executions.

That's something I would expect in only the red states.

None of the drugs are readily available and the two that have never been used in an execution will be litigated and one of the drugs would have to be administered orally.

As a resident of the Golden State I'm shocked we haven't done something about this yet with a progressive Governor and super majorities in the state houses. I'd be surprised if state sanctioned murder is still approved by a majority here but I could be wrong.

The Governor of Califoria can issue a partdon for any crime EXCEPT when someone has been convicted of two or more felonies. In cases were the pardon applicate has two felonies, the governor must get approval of the State Supreme Court with at least four justices agreeing to the pardon.

That is in the Californian State Constitution thus must be followed until the voters vote to strike it down. No one is proposing such a repeal.

Presumably there are at least some death sentences that he could commute without State Supreme Court approval.
