Trump visits Iowa church: gets a lesson in humility

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — On the second-to-last Sunday before the Iowa caucuses, Donald Trump settled into a fifth row pew of an Iowa church for a lesson in humility.

"I don't know if that was aimed at me ... perhaps," Trump said after the hourlong service at the First Presbyterian Church.

<snip>

"Can you imagine eye telling hand, 'Get lost, I don't need you' or hearing the head telling the foot, 'You're fired, your job has been phased out?'" the reader said. "You're fired!" was Trump's signature catchphrase when he hosted "The Apprentice" television show.

"I heard that," Trump later told reporters, when asked about the reference. "I wondered if that was for me. They didn't even know I was coming, so I doubt it. But it's an appropriate phrase."

1 Corinthians, Chapter 12 (one Corinthian, not two!)

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

The pastor at this church used some modern cliches to fill the text, but, looking a bit deeper, this is quite the slam at Trump. These verses are Paul's discussion of how the body of the church should be viewed, but for our agnostics and atheists on the board, it applies just as well to the body of the United States. All parts of the body are important, all peoples are important, all should care for one another. If one person is harmed, it is harm for us all.

Take that, you one-percenters! Jesus was quite the revolutionary, and if Trump had actually read any of Jesus' words, he'd be horrified.

But more relevant than that or whether "You're fired!" has cosmic significance...

"Jesus is teaching us today that he has come for those who are outside of the church," she said, preaching a message of healing and acceptance for "those who are the most unloved, the most discriminated against, the most forgotten in our community and in our world."

Among those she cited were "the Syrian refugees" and "the Mexican migrants." Trump has advocated barring all Syrian refugees from entering the country because of potential security risks and deporting all of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally. He's said he wants to create a safe zone for refugees instead.

Donald Trump has been given a lesson in Christian values, humility and kindness during a service in an Iowa church just two weeks before primary voting begins in the race for US president.

Trump has appeared to struggle to affirm his Christian credentials and during an hour-long service at Muscataine’s First Presbyterian Church, the Rev Dr Pamela Saturnia also indirectly questioned some of his policy positions.

Among those she cited were “the Syrian refugees” and “the Mexican migrants”.

Trump has advocated barring all Syrian refugees from entering the country because of what he claims are potential security risks and deporting all of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally. He has said he wants to create a safe zone for refugees instead.

Wrong church to go to, Donald. There must be a lot of 'fire and brimstone' churches that conservative go to.
