Const. Forcillo found guilty of attempted murder

Source: CTV Toronto

Toronto Police Const. James Forcillo has been found guilty of attempted murder in the death of a Toronto teen but the jury also found him not guilty of second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Forcillo was charged following the death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim, who died after being shot several times on July 27, 2013.
The officer pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder in Yatim's death.

The Toronto police officer's lawyers argued that Forcillo's actions were justified and carried out in self-defence, while the crown said his actions were unnecessary.

there's going to be a lot of upset people here in Toronto. Media is prepared for riots, or at least strong demonstrations.

manslaughter or murder when the victim actually died?

I'd love to know what kind of instructions the judge gave to the jury when they were charged before deliberations.

The jury believed Forcillo was justified in firing the first three shots at Yatim. This is reflected in the not guilty verdict for second-degree murder. The jury found Forcillo was not justified in the second round of shots at Yatim, hence guilty of attempted murder.

Jurors reached the verdicts Monday after six days of deliberations.

I'd recently seen that the victim had done internet searches for the best way to commit suicide painlessly and he orchestrated a bunch of what happened - had someone call police before he started trouble. A number of folks suspect suicide by cop. Apparently, none of that was allowed in the case. Don't know why yet.

I'm not taking sides. I do not feel I know enough one way or the other.

Here's a review of why they didn't include the suicide by cop stuffhttps://news.vice.com/article/toronto-cop-found-guilty-of-attempted-murder-in-landmark-ruling-not-guilty-of-murder

I wonder whether the officer could sense what the victims mind set was from his body language. I'm not sure.
