Ernie Chambers filibuster sinks bill to end local gun regulations in favor of state law

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan

LINCOLN — Supporters of a bill to make it easier to own guns in Omaha and Lincoln came one vote short Wednesday of breaking through a six-hour filibuster in the Nebraska Legislature.

Senators voted 32-10 to cut off a filibuster led by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha. Supporters of Legislative Bill 289 needed 33 votes in order to halt the delay and vote whether to advance the measure to the second round.

The outcome of Wednesday’s vote means the bill is done for the year.

“The NRA was defeated today,” Chambers said, referring to the National Rifle Association, a strong backer of measures like the one debated by the Legislature.

and for many of those years he was the only PoC there. He's done more positive things for Nebraska than you could imagine. He's well worth a google just for his anti capital punishment work alone.

Steve would be a big help!
