Large avalanche leaves 5 dead in B.C. Interior

Source: CTV News

Five people are dead after getting caught in a human-triggered avalanche in the North Rockies Friday.

The victims were all snowmobiling when the slide hit around 1:30 p.m. near McBride, a small town located between Prince George and Jasper National Park.

Mounties said at least three groups of snowmobilers were in the area when the avalanche occurred.

Every year this keeps happening. At some point people have to look at the risk for these "adventure" sports and decide if it's worth dying for.

Snowmobilers and skiers look for "excitement" in the backcountry up here. And need to be rescued with the province picking up the tab. Just so they can have an adventure to tweet about.

They should be required to purchase "adventure" insurance before doing something stupid.

Of course, Wall St. did that and broke the insurance company and we all got the tab anyway.

CBC reported the province was considering it because out the complaints from tax payers. But search and rescue is opposed to charging the rescue-es because they fear it will deter people from calling for help or reporting lost loved ones if they think a fee will be attached.

Frankly, I don't feel bad for them. It's not like they don't know where the backcountry is and they wander accidentally. They know backcountry conditions because they are reported in many places. They are intentionally seeking a thrill and either think they'll be fine or if not they'll get rescued.

the shitheads shouldn't go "adventuring" there. If they do, they might as well be jumping off a high bridge. They're suiciding by snow.

It still makes me sad. There are all kinds of extreme sports and they all end up killing some. But without them, does the human spirit ever know if it can go further? What about sending people into space in rockets?

We lost people doing that risky thing too. But the successes we had and the things we learned made it worth it, didn't it?
