Thousands March in Paris Rain to Protest State of Emergency

Source: Associated Press

PARIS — Jan 30, 2016, 1:23 PM ET

Thousands of people have marched in the Paris rain to denounce plans to renew France's state of emergency and revoke the French citizenship of dual nationals convicted of terrorism.

Human rights groups, politicians and unions joined Saturday's march in Paris.

France imposed a state of emergency, which gives more power to police and administrative authorities, after the Nov. 13 Paris attacks that killed 130 people. It is expected to be renewed at the end of February.

Jean-Baptiste Eyrault, of the Right to Housing movement, said: "Democracy is moving backwards."

I guess you thought Vietnam War protestors ought to have flown to Hanoi to protest?

for salafist rebels in Syria to buy weapons and Merkel et al opened the borders to let them all in.

It's a self-inflicted catastrophe.

justification means that we can always explain future attacks against any western country.

btw - what should be done in honor of the Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Atheists murdered by muslims because of a refusal to convert to islam?

We create our own enemies.

Putting our heads in the sand and ignoring that fact is what allows them to get away with it.

The west and wahabbi allies are funding and supporting the slaughter of christians, yazidis, gays and secular muslims in Iraq and Syria and the slaughter of the same and black people in Libya.

they are against stripping French citizenship from terrorists. Weird people. I'd, personally, leave the person stateless for the rest of their lives. But if they have dual nationalism, they can just live in that other country.
Like you said, if you don't like where you live, leave.

"The state of emergency gives more power to police and administrative authorities, allowing for searches without warrants, house arrests and other measures. "My France of liberties, where are you?" read one banner.

The parliament is expected to approve the prolongation of the exceptional measures in voting later this month. The current state of emergency expires Feb. 26.

Jean-Baptiste Eyrault, of the Right to Housing movement, said: "Democracy is moving backwards ... at the expense of judges and the rule of law, freedom to demonstrate and (freedom) of expression ."Last week, a French high court upheld the measure, saying the danger "has not disappeared."

Opponents of another plan to revoke citizenship for dual nationals convicted of terrorism claim the move would feed racism, creating a two-tier system of citizens. Many dual nationals are Muslims, and some feel they are blamed for attacks by Islamist extremists.

Green party lawmaker Noel Mamere, taking part in the march, said the state of emergency lays the foundations for "a society under surveillance." Christiane Taubira resigned suddenly last week as France's justice minister over her opposition to the plan, and as it became evident her views were on a collision course with those of President Francois Hollande."

I'm not really sure what to make of it.

only for people that have been convicted of terrorism, right? So it shouldn't create a two tiered system. Except for the one that exists already, terrorists and everyone else. And if you are stripped of your French citizenship, shouldn't you also be deported? Serve the time for whatever terrorist act you committed, and if you ever get out of prison, you can go back to wherever it is that you came from.
I still fail to see the problem. I'm not happy about the searches without warrants and extra surveillance. But I'm more than ok with punishing the guilty.

Is that a version of, "America. Love it or leave it"? Those marching sound pretty liberal to me.

Maybe we should tell the RW National Front to stop protesting against immigrants and refugees, accept government policy or "get the f out' of France.

130 people while wearing suicide vests get the f out? Or anyone willing to help them?
But I think anyone willing to help that person should lose their citizenship.
