More murders motivated by anti-gay bias occurred last year than any year since the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs began collecting data in 1998, the national advocacy organization reported this week.

"I think that hate violence against these communities has been going on for a very long time and the reports that we're seeing may not even be a reflection on the true pervasiveness of the violence," said Chai Jindasurat, one of the authors of the report. "I think we're really just getting the tip of the iceberg here."

The Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate crimes, has found that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are far more likely to fall victim to a hate crime than members of any other protected group in the United States.
The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs reported that within the LGBT community, those who were members of multiple minority groups were especially at risk of hate crime violence. People of color, immigrants, transgender people, youth, and young adults were all disproportionately hurt in 2011, but white gay non-transgender men still represented the largest group of victims.

With the pervasiveness of hate and venom spewing forth from the right-wing & too many fundamentalist "Christians," it's not hard to see why this is happening. The swill touting the US as a "Christian nation" are too often the same ones spewing the hate and feeding the minds of vile lowlifes who are committing the violence.

(4,357 posts)I don't think I have ever seen so much anti-gay shit on the internet as I have seen recently. Gays are finally getting recognized as humans in some states, so maybe it is simply a byproduct of progress? Maybe it'll ease up soon. That's what the optimistic part of me hopes.

(1,203 posts)With going into an election year, I told him that they repub's would be really ratcheting up the anti-gay rhetoric to get votes. Along with that the hate crimes were going to go up.
I hate to be proven right in this case.

Double sigh.

(45,319 posts)Each and every one of them, who blog or preach their ignorant hate and actively spread that poison are accomplices to these killings, they are the crowd that urges the violence on. The McClurkins and Rick Warrens as well as the rank and file Freeper types are culpable, and so are those who allow them to continue their screeds. Culpable. All of them. The ones who sat down and wrote attacks specifically against us should all be in jail for inciting murder. And some of the worst of them claim to be atheists, so this is not just the religious, not just 'fundies'. Some of them will shout 'science' as they spew ignorant slanders. 'God' and 'Science' are just wrapping paper words used by liars to gloss up their venom and hide their objectives.
We must never forget until the violence ends.
