China urges United States, North Korea to hold direct talks

Source: Reuters

China's foreign ministry on Monday urged the United States and North Korea to sit down with each other face-to-face and resolve their problems, as tension continues to climb on the Korean peninsula after North Korea's latest rocket test.

While China was angered by the launch, it has also expressed concern at plans by Washington and Seoul to deploy an advanced U.S. missile defense system, saying it would impact upon China's own security.

"The focus of the nuclear issue on the peninsula is between the United States and North Korea," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing.

"We urge the United States and North Korea to sit down and have communications and negotiations, to explore ways to resolve each other's reasonable concerns and finally reach the goal we all want reached." North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Feb. 7 carrying what it called a satellite, drawing renewed international condemnation just weeks after it carried out a nuclear bomb test.

WTH? People complain about the influence of America in the world, but whenever there's a problem they call the USA for help. Even China--as if they don't have the more influence on NK than any other country on the planet.

Considering that North Korea depends on China for it's survival, shouldn't china be involved in any discussion about North Korea's future? After all, China is in a position to veto any agreement they don't like.

But I think the Chinese have given up, especially now that Kim Jong Um is in charge. They see him as too volatile. The other thing is that North Korea has been cozening up to Russia again (who was a large influence until the Soviet Union fell) and my guess would be Putin is telling them to take a hard line stance against China and the US.
