Legal cloud gathers over Scott Walker as recall election approaches

Source: isthmus.com News, by Ruth Conniff on Sunday 06/03/

With the recall election less than two days away, federal prosecutors are closing in on Governor Scott Walker, according to veteran political reporter David Shuster, former Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, and former district attorney Bob Jambois.

In a conference call organized by state Democrats on Saturday evening, June 2, Shuster, Lautenschlager, and Jambois laid out evidence that Walker is a target of a federal investigation.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Communications Director Graeme Zielinski added that there is evidence of wrongdoing after Walker's time as Milwaukee County Executive, and that the investigation includes criminal activity during his time as governor.

Based on conversations with a lawyer who has knowledge of the investigation, "We believe that Scott Walker set up a secret computer network in the governor's office ....

MADISON — The district attorney isn’t talking. The keeper of records isn’t talking. Daniel Bice isn’t talking about who’s talking.

But somebody with information on the super-secret-turned very public John Doe investigation into people once associated with Republican Gov. Scott Walker is divulging at least enough information to make headlines and spur campaign rhetoric.

One legal expert tells Wisconsin Reporter that whoever is leaking information to the media appears to be connected to the John Doe probe, and could pay a legal price for doing what such secret investigations strictly prohibit on penalty of jail time — talking.

While this should be a slam dunk recall effort, the forces of unlimited corporate money from the likes of the Koch brothers are evident.

The Repukkkes have been able to communicate a narrative that public employees covered by collective bargaining are "raping" the state's taxpayers and living "high on the hog". The Democrats have not done, IMHO, a very good job combatting that narrative.

The voters should be taken aback by the theatrics that played out in Madison this past winter but they are now more interested in grilling their brats and heading to the lake.

Should Walker survive recall, this will be used by the reich-wing as vindication of their policy of divide and conquer. They will be emboldened and we will see no end to the horrific attacks on women, the poor, the sick, etc. In their minds these are all expendable.

It's basically a clash of ideologies ... tax fairness vs. private property rights.

Tax fairness people (Democrats) believe all should pay their fair share, with wealthy people paying more.
We work for them, they profit when we work for them, buy from their companies, fight their wars. The
rich should help us when we're sick, old, ill. Sort of like the idea of a Commonwealth.

Private property rights people (Republicans, Libertarians) believe in the era of "Mine!" Each person should keep
all his own money earned, and if you don't have any, that is your problem. They believe in no government so
people keep all their money. Of course they like the tax loopholes that subsidize their businesses, retirement plans,
trusts, investment losses and investments. Public services? There shouldn't be any, just pay private companies with
your own money to provide them.

The Democrats have not sold their ideology well for 30 years. We always back down. We are reaping the incompetence
of our Democratic leaders.

The one intangible I am optimistic about is Obama. He has a lot of fight in him, he's a great campaigner, perhaps even
better than Bill Clinton. And last Friday's jobs report leaves us just about guaranteeing an improvement in those
numbers by November. Wonder how they arranged that? Coincidence?

From inside a jail cell.

And you can bet Charles and David will go his bail.

Like I said. I hope I'm wrong.
Just not that part about the jail cell.

who would get to control who replaces him? Would the Dems have any say in it or would his 'win' or give control to the Republican Party, or would there have to be another election?

Because if all this is true, why would the Republicans risk having someone who is likely to be indicted win, unless it's now all about keeping control?

The lieutenant Governor takes over. Who that is will also be determined tomorrow.

In a regular election the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected on the same ticket. Due to a fluke in Wisconsin law, they are both up for recall tomorrow, on separate ballots. So there is a very real chance that Walker could retain his seat, but Rebecca Kleefisch (current Lt. Gov) could lose to her opponent Mahlon Mitchell. He is currently the President on a firefighters union, and a Dem.

So if there is any fall off on the ballot, we could have a Republican Gov, Democrat Lt. Gov (or vice versa).

in control. That makes me feel better. Glad I asked.

However, I think Walker will be defeated, just a feeling but I'm going with it. I do believe in the power of positive thinking. Welcome to DU btw,
