Thousands expected to rally at Capitol Thursday for 'Day Without Latinos and Immigrants'

Thousands of Latinos, immigrants and their allies are expected to descend on the state Capitol in Madison today to defeat what they believe to be anti-immigrant legislation.

The rally is called "A Day Without Latinos and Immigrants in Wisconsin." It is intended to both defeat the legislation and show the economic power of Latinos and immigrants, said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera, one of the organizing groups.

"We must oppose two anti-immigrant laws rapidly moving through the state Legislature that will become laws if we don't unite as a community to stop them," Neumann-Ortiz said.

One bill, SB 533, would restrict a county's ability to issue local identification cards to people such as immigrants who are in the country illegally. It has passed both the Assembly and the Senate and is awaiting action by Gov. Scott Walker.

The other bill, AB 450, would ban so-called "sanctuary cities." These are cities where public employees are prohibited from inquiring about someone's citizenship status. The bill has passed the Assembly and is awaiting action in the Senate.

Organizers said diverse businesses across the state would close Thursday, including cheese factories, tattoo shops, coffee shops, child care centers, nail salons and restaurants. Numerous workers in construction, hotels, manufacturing, and agriculture will not work, organizers said.....................................

I think the group could have selected a better name but the cause is good!
