Wisconsin blocks federal funds from reaching Planned Parenthood

Reuters

(Reuters) - Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker signed two bills into law on Thursday that block federal funding from Planned Parenthood and could cost the local organization millions of dollars. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin could lose about $7.5 million a year because of the measures, an organization spokeswoman said.

Texas, Louisiana other Republican-controlled states tried to halt funding for the reproductive health organization after an anti-abortion group released videos last summer purported to show Planned Parenthood officials trying to negotiate prices for aborted fetal tissue. Under federal law, donated human fetal tissue may be used for research, but profiting from its sale is prohibited.

A grand jury in Texas cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing and indicted two anti-abortion activists behind the filming of the videos for tampering with a government record and violating a prohibition on the purchase and sale of human organs.

One of the new Wisconsin rules requires the state to apply for federal "Title X" family planning grant money and to give those monies to "less controversial public entities" such as state, county and local health departments and clinics, a statement from Walker's office said.

Who decides what is controversial and what is not?
Frankly, I think the so-called Crisis Pregnancy Centers are pretty damn controversial, but I imagine they'll be getting a chunk of this money.

Because there is no way CPCs are in any way authorized or certified as health organizations/clinics on anything but the stupid posters in their offices.

Been around DU since 2004. Have seen this community mobilize to help out when politics deprive citizens of much needed resources. Not certain how to do this, but would like to start a " fund" to help Wisconsin PP continue to provide valuable services to the public. Can anyone advise how this could be done? Many thanks, hannah

are willfully ignorant, judgmental and very anti-reason/science. They can't even save the once wonderful University of Wisconsin system so I doubt there is going to be any relief for PP. I suggest if you live there get out as soon as you can...

and I can attest that it is a horrible place inhabited mostly by hateful and horrible people. There was a time it was quite progressive and many educated and decent people lived there but the coming of Scooter Walker and the Koch invasion drove away what remained.

It will take decades for WI to have any hopes of recovering from the precipitous fall it took under Republicans and it looks as though they are only digging deeper holes...

They're so tight they squeak!

They are tighter than the skin on a summer sausage!

I was blown away that many merchants don't take credit cards because of the fees. ATM over there! 3 buck fee of course.

If the Packers win the Super Bowl, I don't want Walker near the podium. As a shareholder I will let 1265 Lombardi Ave know!

You really can't go home again.
