'Hostile armed person' in UMass Amherst dormitory, students sheltering in place

AMHERST - A person armed with a gun was reportedly in a University of Massachusetts Amherst dormitory and people on campus were advised to shelter in place.

That's according to a text alert sent to students and staff Thursday afternoon shortly before 6 p.m.

The alert said a "hostile, armed person" was in Pierpont Hall in the Southwest residence area and a handgun was shown but not fired.

I lived in the same area, but not that dorm.
Something like 8,000 kids live there.

What a mess; I hope it ends quickly and safely.

My alma mater too 30+ years ago. Used to live in SW. There are a number of dorms in SW including 5 high rise towers (I lived in both a hi rise and a low rise like Pierpont). A huge number of students reside in that complex. But as a note, the entire campus is surrounded by moo moos and baaa baaas. Lots of farmland.

AMHERST - The University of Massachusetts lifted an emergency shelter-in-place order shortly after 7:15 p.m. Thursday, but campus police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the campus being shut down for more than an hour, officials said.

two white young men, not students, one wearing a gold chain, got into an argument with a student in a dorm room and took out a gun. attackers got into car and fled campus. student received lacerations on head. police say crime was not random. lockdown ended after 2 hrs.
