COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — No one was injured Saturday night as police said a fistfight turned into a shooting at a Columbia mall Saturday as several presidential campaigns partied about a dozen miles away.

The two men who fired the shots were not immediately arrested, as dozens of police officers searched and as others went from store to store at the Columbiana Mall letting scared shoppers know it was safe to leave, Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said.

The incident began as a fight between two people about 7 p.m. in front of the Kay's Jewelers near the food court, Holbrook said.

The men "pulled guns and fired in the air," Holbrook said.

That way, these volatile gun nuts would only be endangering themselves and each other, not numerous innocent bystanders of all ages.

Need I add

Where, despite being illegal to do so, thousands of rounds are fired into the air every night, usually by way of a celebration of one kind or another.

The result: death by stray or even falling bullets is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths. Thousands more are, of course, injured as well.

Freud had a controversial - but probably accurate - diagnosis for people bitten by the gun bug. And for the sake of decorum I'll leave it at that.
