Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval tells White House he's not interested in Supreme Court nomination.
The White House was considering the 52-year-old Sandoval, the state's first Hispanic governor and an abortion rights supporter, to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that regardless of the nominee Obama is likely to settle on in the next few weeks, "This nomination will be determined by whoever wins the presidency in the fall."
Democratic have tried to keep a daily focus on the issue, and on Thursday, about two dozen Democratic senators stood outside the Supreme Court and called on Republicans to consider an Obama nominee.

(28,017 posts)And he knew the GOP would never vote for him, and screw his chances at reelection or any other office. He is young, so he would rather avoid the pigsty that is today's US Senate.

(1,727 posts)only likely outcome was him being smeared by the RW noise machine for being associated with Obama.
He's not about to go against the Repugs. Which tells me he should never have been considered to begin with.

(24,979 posts)Name floated by rumor from unnaamed source, then he says he's not interested, and it's turned into "withdraws nomination" (which is not only wildly wrong in its intended meaning but in addition syntactically suggests he did the nominating).

(8,138 posts)All sides can now poll what might happen if he really appoints a Repub or something similar. Obama is laying groundwork for the actual nominee.

(953 posts)knowing they are a political football and highly unlikely to get a hearing,
let alone a fair one
This will narrow the field to older candidates willing to do a favor to Democrats
or Obama, or who want the notoriety
Any serious candidate knows it's a nomination that won't come again
So my guess is centrists will not be available
Find a 98 year old Republican
or a progressive who can make some political noise and who would be popular
to the voters in November
JackRiddler
(24,979 posts)And never mind a 98 year old Republican!
Put up a progressive who makes noise! Let them refuse to even hold a hearing! Dare them to make this an issue for November!

(953 posts)to defend the Constitution and execute their duties
'I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter so help me God.'
and now they won't do their jobs
It's en masse public perjury
and we must grab every voter by the hand and be sure they understand it that way

Republican voters are already fired up from there being a Democratic president.

(1,352 posts)that one of their own is going to be in the White House next year...otherwise, they are just holding out for Sanders or Clinton to make the choice. Well, that, and this is a great way to yet again say "fuck you" to Obama and to once more treat him as not the "real" president.
DarthDem
(5,255 posts)They're weighing a nominee to be submitted by Obama, a losing proposition for them, versus at least a possibility that Trump will get to make the nomination to fill the vacancy instead, sure.
But I'm not so sure that this says anything about their confidence in winning the presidency. I fully expect them to refuse to consider any nominee put forth by Clinton/Sanders (I assume it will be Clinton) either, particularly if they still control the Senate. If they don't control the Senate, they'll have to filibuster, and then the Democratic Senate leadership will have to abolish the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees as they did for all other nominees a couple of years ago.

(8,138 posts)A Dem win puts them right back where they are now, but an R win gets them something more.

(1,178 posts)They should float the possibility of re-appointing Sandra Day O'Connor to the Court. She retired to care for her ill husband, who has since passed away. It would be quite amusing to watch what the Republicans do with this.
FreedomRain
(413 posts)That would be awesome, I wonder if she would feel up to it. Maybe so, she is still hearing cases occasionally, and we know she did not really want to retire when she did.
