Romney calling Trump 'phony,' urging Republicans to shun him
Source: AP
Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is charging into the increasingly divisive White House race with a verbal lashing of Donald Trump and a plea for fellow Republicans to shun the front-runner for the good of country and party.
Romney is branding the billionaire businessman as "a phony, a fraud" whose "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University," according to a speech Romney planned to give at the University of Utah on Thursday morning. The Associated Press obtained excerpts of his remarks in advance.
Trump, in turn, dismissed Romney as "a stiff" who "didn't know what he was doing" as the party's candidate in 2012 and blew a chance to beat President Barack Obama. "People are energized by what I'm saying" in the campaign and turning out in remarkable numbers to vote, Trump told NBC's "Today."
In ratcheting up the rhetoric, Romney cast his lot with a growing chorus of anxious Republican leaders people many Trump supporters view as establishment figures in trying to slow the New York real estate mogul's momentum.

That sounds like a trick algebra question! I think it's both, therefore, each negating the other such that the answer is equal to "X"... which is X=0.

(6,960 posts)The supreme irony is that when a Repuglican establishment loser like Romney goes on the attack against Trump, it only further confirms to the Tea Party base that Trump is the right guy for them.
You know, what is so funny about all of this is that for nine years now the Repuglican Party from Establishment to Tea Party has engaged in nothing but reactionary Obama hate. For all those years they never presented alternative policies, ideas, or programs -- just hate and obstruct Obama.
The Mark Levins, Limbaughs, and Fox News were the cheerleaders for this Repuglican strategy, they made this bed of nothing but emotional reactionaryism.
The perfect embodiment of that culture in the form of Donald Trump has emerged and is sleeping in their bed and now the Repuglican establishment and even the bomb-throwing talk radio subculture is aghast that Trump is doing so well with 'their' people.
Think about it, Trump sounds like any daily broadcast of the Mark Levin show ... but Mark Levin hates Trump!
The Repuglicans are clueless.
On the other hand, I'm not one to discount Trump's appeal. I think he could be a serious contender if he gets the nomination and could win, especially if the Democrats are foolish enough to nominate Mrs. Clinton. There is still much economic distress among working and middle class Americans ... and boring, tired, old establishment, status quo politicians are not what the electorate is looking for in 2016.

So what if Trump's promises to be America's best deal maker contradicts
being an unflinching conservative? The GOP base doesn't care.

Donald Trump unleashed a tirade against Mitt Romney at his campaign rally this afternoon in Portland, Maine, saying the former presidential candidate held back from running this time around because of him.
So when Mitt started raising his head a few months ago, I was very strong," Trump said. "I said, Mitt Romney should not run. He's a choke artist.
Trump also suggested that Romney may still have a desire to run.
I heard Mitt Romney made a fairly long speech," he said. "Ill just address it quickly because its irrelevant."
